Chapter 3
------------------------- Jess's pov
We ran as fast as we could back throughout the field. None of us had any shoes on so the stubs of the corn scratched our feet as we ran. "Kat, you take the trailer. Ash and I will take the combine!" I leapt up the steps of the combine, flung the door open and turned the engine on. Checking the grain in the tank, I picked up the radio walkey talky "Okey, we're nearly full so can you fill up this load and then go and drop it off by the barn." the device crackled in my hand. "Sure thing" came the reply. Placing the grimy walkey talky back in it's holder we set off. As we drove along we emptied the grain out into the trailer parallel to us. I frowned. Surely my grandma should be here by now. Ahh well. She probably had a lot to do. That's all. The walkie talky crackled "All done. I'm going to go and drop this off by the barn now." She accelerated and headed to the gate. "I wonder where your grandma is?" Kat stated. "Probably just forgotten, she should be here is a bit."
" I hope she comes soon. Im starving!" Jess's grandma always brought cake and juice for them. The sound of an approaching car caught our attention. A silver landrover raced along the dirt track leaving a trail of dust behind it. The landrover beeped a few times and the girls both waved. "Just in time!" I grinded to a halt. We both hopped out and ran across the field. The car gently came to a stop and my grandma came out. "Grandma!" I smiled as she gave Kat and I a hug. "Want a spot of cake? I can imagine this is rather tiring!" She frowned as she saw our wet hair "but you have obviously found time for fun! Well I hope your not too exhausted!" she chuckled, putting emphasis on exhausted. Whilst she was talking a boy came out of the passenger seat. He had sandy blonde hair and piercing blue eyes. "Girls, this is dave. He's your cousin." he geustured to thr boy beside her. Kat and I blinked a few times in surprise. "Umm. Cousin? Are
you Chris's brother from colleage. We met one I think. But I don't really remember you." Kat asked.
"No dear. This is your cousin from Jess's mums side. You remember. You used to play the whole time before your Aunty moved to America. Anyway. They've come back. Dave's mum has a new job back in England! Dave is going to stay on the farm for a bit. He doesn't know much about the country." Dave frowned at this like he didn't want to know about the country. "well your going to love it here! Gonna need a bit of elbow grease but it's hella fun!"
He shrugged and kicked a stone. My grandma turned and got back into the car, leaving us the cake. She honked a few times and drove away.
The tractor honked as it passed Jess's grandma. Kat parked up next to the combine. She hopped out and waved enthusiastically to us. "who's this?" asked kat as she stood beside Jess and ash. "oh... Err this is Dave my cousin. Dave; Ash and Kat. Guys, dave."
"Whatever." He replied curtly. Plopping down on a trail of excess straw. He plucked a piece straw from the pile he was sitting on and popped in his mouth. " Excuse me?" asked Kat in confusion.
"Get to work then. Chop chop I've got all I need here. A piece of straw and some hot babes to entertain me. Thats what the countryside is about after all!" he smirked, leaning back with his hands behind his head.
"aww hell no! Where's the rifle?" Kat demanded running towards the grubby landrover parked outside the gate. "WOW! calm down! Ash! Go get her!" I yelled. Ash just stood there. Her mouth hitting the floor whilst Kat was already loading the gun. "Look here! that's no way to talk to my friends! I objected. "Hey jess, ash!"
A familiar voice yelled. I turned to see Henry and his friends running towards us. "You left half you clothes by the river!" Sam chuckled, holding their jumpers aloof. "I am not joking! I will actual shoot him if he doesn't apologies and get off his lazy american, burger filled buttox!" Kat cried. "Whats going on?" Dan asked. Confusion written all over his face. Sam walked over to Kat and put his arms around her waist. "Put the gun down hun!" he soothed her.
"Not until that cityboy apologises!" she pointed the gun at Dave. At the sight of the gun he laughed. Infuriating us even more. "I'm surprised you can lift that thing! Let alone fire it."
"hey. I wouldn't say that! I've seen Kat shoot before! She's good!" Dan defended her.
"and who are you? Her boyfriend?"
"who are you? Her dad?" He snarled back.
"erm... This is my cousin dave, from America." explained Jess. Sam gently stroked Kat's hair a few times to calm her down. "Seriously dude. Not a wise move! Trust me. All of these girls can pack a punch!" Sam warned.
"I'll keep that in mind!" he replied dryly.
"hey guys! We need to go!" Henry looked at his watch. "we've got britnys party tonight! Will we see you there?"
I contemplated going to that stuck up pigs party. "Probably not. We still have a lot to do. Sorry!"
"Don't worry about it! See you guys later then!" They all waved as they sprinted across the field.
We waved them off before turning back to the reluctant dave. "look city kid. I couldn't care if you were the queens cousin. You're on our farm so you do as we say and the more you complain the more jobs we give you. If you don't finish the jobs you don't get fed! Gettit?" I scowled in annoyance. "you can't make me! I'll tell my mother! You'll be in so much trouble!" he sneered back, loosing his careless, cool act.
Kat cocked the gun once more. "Well city kid, out here we do things a little differently, we have to earn our keep!"He raised his hands up again. "fine." he replied curtly and stood up.
"You can start with something easy." I nodded towards the combine. "you can help us check the moisture in the grain..."
"How am I supposed to do that? Eat it?"
" erm... No. We might live in the country side but we do depend on technology a fair bit. The combine is controlled automatically. We just steer and break."
Dave looked interested at the mention of technology. "Yea. I like working on engines. I have a BMW, jaguar, land rover and porche."
"why do you need so many cars?" Ash asked.
"dude that's nothing! Mike back in the states has thirteen! I still want a few Lamborghinis!"
"I still don't get why you need so many cars?" Ash looked genuinely shocked. "why not? The ladies love a rich man!" he smirked, winking at them. "How can you just... Afford to buy cars the whole time?"
"well my mum works really high up in the white house. She got a job transfer as the presedents overseas consecutive... Or something like that, she isn't sure weather it's permanent or just a long buisness trip." he explained smoothly. We shrugged, "cool" and got back to work.
