I once thought that... maybe I wasn't meant to be here. I wasn't meant to be here in this world. Maybe I was meant somewhere else, somewhere darker and cruel where you could hide your feelings and have the freedom you always itched for.
I didn't know why but obviously, we don't have that kind of freedom. We're always locked away in a world full of rules and laws.
But in dreams, there's no such thing as "laws."
"Azareth?"
"Hm?" I said, looking up to a friend of mine. I hated that name. Azareth. I always preferred Aza for short."You're spacing out again," Bella, my one and only best friend, looked at me in the eyes filled with curiosity and concern. "What's wrong?"
I shrugged. One of the habits I have is spacing out in front of everybody; thinking about my own thoughts and listening to them. Bella held her waist and said, "Aza Jay Dean, what is going on with you?"
She poked my forehead, "Ever since you had that..." she paused and started making air quotes with her fingers, "...'dream' you had, you've been really quiet and spacious with your thoughts."
"I'm always quiet," I said.
"Exactly."
"What are you talking about?" I asked while raising an eyebrow.RING! RING!
Saved by the bell. I quickly grabbed my things and faced Bella. "Well, see ya, B.", and walked away.
As I walked my way to the hall, I couldn't stop thinking about him. Maybe Bella was ABOUT to be right. Suddenly, even my own thoughts stopped me from focusing on walking, so I accidentally tripped and dropped all my things.
"Goddamnit..." I said as I kneeled on one knee while picking up my things as fast as I could. Then everyone walking from the halls suddenly disappeared to their classrooms, only leaving me in the halls...
... and one boy at the end of the hall, staring right at me. His brawny shoulders were slightly slumping. His emerald green eyes searching my own blue ones. He had jet black hair slightly wavy and getting blown away by the wind. He even had that look on his face which almost reminds me of something on the tip of my tongue. It's him.
I stood up slowly with my books in my arms, and stared right back at him. There was a period of awkward silence-
"Aza Dean? Ryan Heart? Please report to the principal's office." The voice from the speaker said.
"Ah, sh*t," I said quietly so the boy couldn't hear me. So his name is Ryan Heart, I assume. That's a cool name, honestly.
On my way to the principal's office, me and the boy never actually spoke to each other just yet. We just walked there, together. It was strange, I know. But somehow, I felt like I met him somewhere, like, I had a connection to him somehow. Maybe he thought the same since I noticed him peeking glances at me.
I opened the door to Ms. Willis' office. She gave me a warming smile, and gestured me and Ryan Heart to sit down in front of her desk.
"Aza, I have seen you met the new student." She said, nodding at the boy beside me. I didn't even bother to look at him. "I'm sorry, Ms. Willis, I dropped my things on my way to class and—"
"It's alright, Ms. Dean." She said as I paused. Then she looked at Ryan Heart who was a bit uncomfortable."Welcome to Western Highschool, Ryan. I'm sure Azareth Dean will be glad to show you around." She said to him.
"Wait, what?" I asked, and it seemed to Ms. Willis that what I said was rude because she gave me a glance that didn't seem to be satisfied by what I said. "Go ahead, Aza. Show Mr. Heart around."
"Yes, Ms. Willis," I said, trying my best not to roll my eyes. I stood up from my chair as Ryan Heart awkwardly headed out the door. I headed towards the door, but then I heard her whisper my name as I turned my head to her.
"I'm counting on you, Aza."
I nodded a bit confidently. Then headed out the door to meet face-to-face with the one and only Ryan Heart. And for the first time ever, I heard him speak his first words towards me.
"Uhh, hi. I'm Ryan Heart. Aza, right?" He said, cracking a smile as he slowly held his hand out to me. I nodded and shook his hand. "Aza Dean. And don't call me Azareth; it makes me sound like some kind of spell or ancient witch of whatever."
He chuckled. "Alright, Aza."
