It took a couple seconds, but finally I was able to breath once more. Devon was on my case and knew that I was spying on him, but there was still a chance to save myself. He never knew about me going off in the woods and swinging through the trees like Tarzan, so I doubted that he actually thought I was here. In actuality, Dev is a real drama queen, and was probably being so dramatic because he likes riling Logan up. Even Logan's not stupid enough to fall for Devon's shit acting.
I stayed completely still, thanking the lord above that they weren't too bright, and waited for Devon to clear off. But he just kept stepping closer to the tree that I had been sitting in before, looking at it like it might explode. But with me, anythings really possible.
After about three and a half minutes Devon was finally convinced that I wasn't present, and walked off. I was a touch too scared about how close he had gotten, and returned to the fort. Sage hadn't moved a muscle. The water was untouched, along with the treats and the blankets she was happily curled up in.
I took out my portable music device (iPod for all you sophisticated people,) and listened to quiet music. I fully intended on sleeping in the fort tonight, as it was both cool and I wanted Devon to cool off about me taking his stuff for a little while, but at the same time I was waiting anxiously for the call that they would inevitably be forced to endure.
There was still a chance, no matter how small, that they could stumble upon my hideout and just take their crap back. In that case, I was screwed. And they would find the fort. Double bummer.
But the morons can barely walk in a straight line without tumbling over something, so I wasn't as worried as someone who didn't know my brother might be. Sometimes I just pretend I'm not related to him. It makes things so much better for a little while.
I had dozed off for a couple minutes when my phone rang loudly, making me jump slightly and reach out to grab it. I had held it close by for a situation like this one. Sage was still snoozing away, which surprised me, so I flipped open the top and sighed dramatically.
"Hello?"
"Nikki, fine. Fine, you win. Are you happy? Good! Now I need your help. Logan and I split up a couple hours ago to find you and he isn't back yet. Can you bring him back? And when you do, you are so dead." he sounded slightly deranged, but I was focused more on what he was saying.
They had split up hours ago? But I had seen them together and searching no more than a half an hour ago! But I was wrong. I hadn't been asleep for five minutes. One glance at the clock on my phone told me that it was more like five hours. It was ten o'clock at night, and Logan Fucking Lerman was wandering the maybe-bear-infested forest by himself.
I jumped up, holding the phone to my ear and speaking into the receiver urgently.
"Dev, where was the last place you saw him?" I asked into the phone, thinking of where he could possibly be. In a bears stomach was more likely than not.
"I dunno, it's a forest. I don't exactly name the trees! He, we split at a big group of rocks. But Logan said he was headed south, but he didn't have a compass, so how he knew what direction he was headed in is a mystery to me." he listed off, and I smiled. I knew those rocks.
"How many hours, Dev? How many hours has it been since you last saw him?"
"Uh, we were at the rocks at around seven thirty." he sounded calm, but I knew he was worried for his friend.
"Last question: was he tired? Did he want to stop wen he was with you?" I asked. This was probably the most important detail. If he was tired, he wouldn't have covered nearly as much land as he could if he was determined to get somewhere.
