"NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!" Phoebe nearly howled with despair. This couldn't be happening! The ground began to rumble and Phoebe immediately stood next to the limp body of the what seemed to be dead coyote pup. How could he have even died from eating a spider? Phoebe questioned in her thoughts. Of course! IT WAS POISON----it was poisonous. It couldn't be! That poor pup risked his life to save mine? Phoebe thought. Why would he do that, he didn't even know me! I don't deserve to have someone sacrifice their life so I can live mine, I can't live with that guilt!
Phoebe was still standing guard of the dead body. The ground began to not just shake, it began to CRACK. Phoebe's paws struggled for a hold on the rocky, cracked surface that was the ledge before the loooong, LOOOONG drop that was the seemingly endless abyss. She grabbed the dead coyote pup by the scruff of his neck, at least wanting to give him a proper burial, rather than let his body fall down the deep dark abyss, never to be seen, or honored, again. She knew better than to abandon the body and run. She had to be brave, bold, noble, just like the pup that saved her life. The rumbling stopped and Phoebe dropped the coyote to take a loooong, refreshing breath. She pressed her face against the lifeless coyotes and recognized something that made her almost jump out of her own fur. The coyote was still alive. His heart barely beating but at a steady pace. His breaths, quite trembling, but still stable. He was alive, and Phoebe had to save him.
Phoebe remembered from all the movies she watched about lifeguards that if someone was drowning, the lifeguard would have to find a way for the victim to regurgitate or cough up the water in their lungs. Phoebe thought about all the movies she had watched and figured out the cure for what was Black. Widow. Poison. She had heard many times that Black Widow Poison soaks into the bloodstream and organs so quickly that there is no cure before the patient dies, but it had only been a little bit of time after the poison was consumed, and Phoebe knew from books that it took 20 minutes for the body to absorb the poison. She had 10 minutes left to figure out what the cure was and perform it, and if she didn't perform the procedure correctly, or on time, she'd have let the patient............die.
Fortunately and unfortunately, Phoebe didn't have any medical equipment, which was good because it would probably take 5-10 minutes to go get it, and bad because she might not find a cure without proper medical equipment. Phoebe pressed up to the trembling limp body, feeling his pulse. She decided she would have to hope the poison wasn't in his bloodstream or soaking into his organs other than his lungs because she could only remove the poison that was in his lungs. Phoebe started with chest compressions, not even knowing how she knew how to perform them since she was a dog and didn't have to go to school. She continued the chest compressions, and when those didn't work, she moved on to CPR---mouth-to-mouth CPR. She began the procedure, but it didn't work. She looked at her watch---5 minutes left, and she didn't even know the cure. She scratched him HARD with her claws to see his blood, but there were no signs of poison in his bloodstream, so Phoebe carried on.
Phoebe only had one more idea that might work. She jumped up and down on his stomach, and the coyote began to start coughing----SHE ACTUALLY FOUND THE CURE!!!!!!! She began to jump and pound and bounce on his stomach----more progress. After a while of jumping and coughing, the coyote had actually coughed up a spider leg! But after the spider leg, nothing else was coughed up by the coyote. She could only think of her last resort, and it would be GROSS, grosser than mouth-to-mouth with a half-dead body. Grosser than Grace's soggy, flat, rubbery souffles! She would have to make her patient vomit...
