Chapter 5

One month later...

Nova heard a light knock on her door as she was getting ready for school. "Yeah?" Kara opened the door and walked in.

"Sit" Kara said, she sat on Novas bed and Nova sat on her desk chair, "so I have to write a column on the football game at school tonight. Seeing as it is their first playoff game. Alex is going out with Maggie after school so shes not coming home. So I'm responsible for you. You either have to walk home alone after school or you can stay and watch and we can walk home together after the game." Nova weighed her options.

"I think I'll stay and watch the game." Nova still wasn't confident walking home alone yet.

"Ok! But I'm probably going to be on the sideline for most of the game so you will probably be sitting alone most of the game." Kara stood up .

"I don't mind. I can catch up on some homework" Nova smiled.

"Great, we should get going" And with that Kara walked out of Nova's room.

Nova sat on the cold, hard bench hunched over a notebook, scribbling away. She didn't notice that someone had sat down beside her. "Hey, Nova." A voice said. Nova looked up quickly. Caleb.

Nova smiled, "Hi Caleb," she noticed that Caleb was wearing a Midvale High football jersey "I didn't know you were on the football team."

"Yeah," Caleb scratched the back of his neck, "I hardly ever play though. I'm the youngest on the team"

"That's too bad. Do you enjoy when you do get to play though?" Nova asked.

Caleb nodded "Definitely. Its also fun to watch the older guys play too. I can learn so much from watching how they play."
Nova smiled and nodded. There was a moment of dead air between the two of them, neither knew how to break the silence.

"Are you going to watch the whole game?" Caleb asked.

"Yeah, Kara is the reporter for the school newspaper, so she needs to interview all the players and report the game and stuff, so yeah." Caleb's dark green eyes lit up slightly,

"That's great!" He stood up, "I'll make sure that I play. You can watch me get a touchdown!" Nova laughed.

"Phhh. I'd like to see that!" Nova said jokingly.

"Oh you will!" Caleb said with determination, then he basically flew down the steps of the bleachers and into the change rooms.

Kara squinted into the camera. She focused on some players warming up on the field, but before she could snap the shot, a red blob took up the entire view. She looked up to see the cute guy from her homeroom standing in front of her.

"Hi," he smiled. Kara froze, after a short moment she adjusted her glasses and looked down.

"Um, hi." She stammered.

"Hi," Mike smiled, "Kara!"

"Um, hi!" Kara tucked a lose peice of hair behind her ear. Mike smiled, Kara couldn't help but stare into his icy grey eyes. Mike opened his mouth to talk but he was inturrupted by a whistle.

"I've got to go. But I'll talk to you after we win" Mike started to back towards the field. Kara laughed and snapped a shot of Mike smirking at her before he turned and jogged toward his coach.

Nova was starting to get cold. She put her notebook in her backpack and focused on the game. Midvale was up 23-14. Nova still didn't understand how football worked, even after listening to Alex go on and on about the rules and stuff, Nova still didn't get it. She watched as one of the players on Midvale High's team jumped up in the air to catch a ball, but when he came down he landed weird and twisted his ankle. He collapsed and the coach ran to his side, he helped the player up and they walked to the sideline. Nova saw the coach yell something and suddenly Caleb put his helmet on and ran onto the field. Nova laughed.

Nova found herself watching the game intently, she found it more intriguing now that Caleb was playing. Nova watched as Caleb made a run down the field, the quarterback threw the football to Caleb. He caught it and ran, fast. He was ahead of all the other players. The people in the stands started cheering and jumping. Nova joined in. Cheering as loud as she could. Caleb finally made it to the end zone. He stopped running and put his hands in the air. Caleb dropped his hands and looked Nova straight in the eyes. Nova laughed and gave him a thumbs up.

After the game..

Kara had just finished interviewing one of the players on the Midvale High team when she felt a tap on her shoulder. Kara turned around and saw Mike. He was smiling at her, sweat still beading down the sides of his chin. "I told you we would win"

Kara smiled back, "Congrats. Oh, and I got some pretty awesome pictures of you." Kara tapped on her camera.

"I'd love to see those sometime" Mike hinted.

"Maybe you could help me sort through them and pick out the good ones." Kara offered.

Mike chuckled, "Really?" He asked. Kara nodded. "Um, are you free this Saturday?" Mike asked and rubbed the back of his neck.

"Yeah, wanna come over?" Kara asked.

"Sure!" Mike exclaimed,

Kara glanced down at her watch. "Oh crap. Eliza is going to kill me. I have to get going."

"Wait. You're leaving so soon?" Mike's face dropped.

"Yeah. I still have to find Nova and it'll take us a little while to walk home yet so we've got to go" Kara explained.

"Um, wait! I've got a car, give me five minutes and I'll drive you and Nova home." Mike offered. Kara was unsure, and Mike could see it on her face. "Awww, come on. It'll be fine. I'm not planning to kidnap you or anything. Plus I'd like to meet this Nova person who you keep talking about." Kara took a deep breath.

"Fine!" Kara finally blurted out.

"Great! Meet me in the parking lot in 5!" Mike smiled and ran to the change rooms.

Nova was walking aimlessly, searching for Kara but she was no where to be found. Out of the corner of her eye, Nova spotted Caleb, he was making his way toward her. She met him halfway.
"I told you you'd watch me get a touchdown!" He said.

"Well done!" Nova responded. The silence that had been between them before the game came back to haunt them again. Nova found herself looking at Caleb closely, she'd never noticed how green his eyes were. They were like a never ending forest. But her thoughts were cut short when she heard someone calling her name. Nova snapped out of it when someone grabbed her by the shoulders and spun her around. Kara.

"Oh my! I've been looking for you everywhere!" Kara looked exasperated, "we have to go!"

"Okay," Nova responded disappointingly, she turned to Caleb, "I guess I'll see you tomorrow."

"I guess" he smiled a charming smile.

"Bye Caleb"

"Bye Nova" Caleb waved and watched Kara drag Nova off into the crowd of people.

"I was seriously worried about you!" Kara said.

"I'm sorry, I didn't know." Nova looked down.

Nova and Kara were almost to the parking lot when they heard a voice from behind her.

"Well, well, well. If it isn't the Danvers chick!"
