Super Sister

Chapter 9

Kara opened her locker and started pulling out books and things, she felt a tap on her shoulder and turned around and saw no one. When she looked back at her locker, Mike was leaning against the locker next to hers. She jumped slightly and smiled.

"Meanie, you scared me!" Kara said, exasperated. Mike just laughed again. Kara's expression softened.

"Morning" she said and stepped closer. He stood straight and put one of his hands on her cheek. He leaned in and kissed her, it was a short kiss but enough to satisfy them both. Once they had pulled back, Mike pulled something out of his pocket. It was a folded piece of paper. Kara opened it, it was a list of questions. What is your favourite colour? Favourite song? Favourite movie? And so on.

"There are 20 questions on this sheet. Fill it out during class, then write 20 questions on a different paper and give them to me. " Mike smiled, "so we can get to know each other better," Kara smiled at him. The bell rang and they walked into homeroom. They sat next to each other.

During class, Kara pulled out a lined peice of paper and wrote down questions for Mike. She handed him the paper and he started writing. She started filling out the paper he gave her, and once she was finished, she started mindlessly doodling on his paper. As soon as class ended they walked outside together.

"Wanna eat lunch together?" Mike asked.

"Sure!" Together they walked to the cafeteria. When they got there nearly all the tables were taken. Mike spotted a table that just opened up.

"Get me a BLT and baby carrots!" Mike shouted as he ran toward the table. Kara watched him jump on the table and sit on it triumphantly. Kara laughed and headed for the line.

Kara walked down the line, picking out a wrap, a salad, and apple juice for her, and a BLT and baby carrots for Mike. Once she paid she started towards their table. When she got closer he noticed that he was reading. "Hey Mike." She said as she walked up to him.

"Hey!" He looked up at her. Kara sat down across from him and gave him his food. Mike closed his book and thanked her

"Watcha reading?" Kara asked. Mike slid the book across the table and Kara read the cover. Romeo and Juliet. Kara smiled. She slid the book back. Mike put the book in his bag and pulled out his folded peice of paper. He took a bite of his sandwich then unfolded the paper, Kara pulled out her paper and unfolded it.

The two read ther answers and talked about them. They talked for the entire lunch hour until the bell went. Mike walked Kara to her locker.

"That was fun!" Kara said, "the questions were a good idea, we really got to know each other." Mike nodded. He opened his mouth to talk but he was cut off by a piercing noise. A gunshot.

Screams errupted from down the hall. Mike seized Kara's hand and dragged her into a nearby classroom. There was about twenty kids in there and a teacher. The teacher, Mrs. Johnson, was running to the door. She ushered people inside. Once the hallway was almost empty she closed and locked the door. She turned the lights off and closed all the blinds. Now there were about thirty kids in the room. Mrs. Johnson told all of them to make a pile of desks and hide behind it.

Mike and Kara helped stack desks on desks, as soon as they finished building the wall they squished into a corner and sat next to each other, still holding hands.

"Everyone" Mrs. Johnson whisper shouted, "text your parents, tell them what's going on and that you're okay. But don't post anything on social media!" Kara and Mike let go of each other's hands and pulled out their phones. Kara texted Eliza first.

K - Eliza, there's a shooter in the school. I'm in a classroom hiding.

It took a few moment's for Eliza to respond.

E - Sweetie I'm on my way. Are Alex and Nova with you?

K - No, I'll text Alex.

E - Stay safe, keep me updated and I will be there soon. I love you.

K - I love you too.

Kara texted Alex next.

K - Are you okay?!

A - I'm hiding in the bathroom. Where's Nova?

K - I don't know!

A - Kara don't even think of going after her!

K - But I'm bulletproof. I could get to her!

A - Kara no!

K - Alex! Kids could be dying!

A - I said NO!

Before Kara could respond a series of gunshots sounded from right outside of the room. Kara felt her phone vibrate.

A - Kara please don't!

Kara ignored her. She got up and walked toward the door.

"Kara!" Mike called after her.

"Danvers! What are you doing?" Mrs. Johnson scolded. Kara just sped ahead. She got to the door and rushed out before Mike could get to her. The hallway was a ghost town. She ran down the hallways to the bathroom. She pushed the door open and called Alex's name. A stall opened and out came Alex. Kara pulled her into a hug.

"What were you thinking!" Alex scolded, "I told you not to leave!"

"I had to! I don't know where Nova is! And she doesn't have a phone yet so we can't text her!" Alex thought for a moment.

"Go get Nova, but don't you dare try to take down the shooter." Kara scurried off and Alex went back into her stall. When Kara left the bathroom she heard footsteps down the hallway. She prepared to take down the shooter. But she froze in her tracks when she saw it was Mike.

"What are you doing here?!" Kara demanded.

"I came after you! I couldn't just hide knowing that you were in danger!" Kara heard another set of footsteps.

"We have to go!" Kara grabbed Mike's hand and they turned the corner.

"I saw you!" A voice said. Kara went back around the corner and faced the shooter. He was big, wearing full black and a face mask.

"Who are you?" Kara asked. He didn't answer. "Why are you doing this?" The man raised his gun to her. Kara was about to speak but the man shot a bullet. Kara was about to dodge it but a strong force knocked her to the ground. And she saw Mike fall limp next to her. Kara burned with rage and used her super speed to get face to face with the shooter. She picked him up and threw him across the room. Kara sped up to him and broke his gun in half. He threw his hands up in surrender. She kicked him in the gut, hard and he passed out.

Kara ran over to where Mike was laying down, she picked him up and ran outside with him in her arms. Eliza spotted Kara and ran up to her, "what happened?" Eliza asked.

"He got shot." Kara answered with tears in her eyes, laying him down on the grass. A policeman came up to Kara, she told him it was safe and where the shooter was passed out.

Eliza checked over Mike and lifted up his shirt. "Something isn't right," Eliza muttered, she pulled out her phone and called someone.

Kids started flooding out of the school, Kara stood up and looked for Nova and Alex. She spotted Alex and called to her. Alex ran over amd pulled Kara into a hug. A tear slipped down Kara's cheek. Alex pulled back, Kara gesured to Mike, who was unconscious and being inspected by Eliza. Another tear slipped down, Alex wiped it off.

"We should find Nova" Kara whispered. Alex nodded, Kara needed a distraction. They walked through the crowd, Kara took off her glasses and used her x-ray vision to look through everyone. She finally spotted Nova backing away from the crowd. She looked terrified. Kara pulled Alex toward Nova. She wished she could just fly over everyone and scoup Nova up in her arms.

Nova saw them and started running towards them, they got to each other and Kara cupped Novas cheeks in her hands and Alex put her hands on her shoulders. "Are you okay. I was so worried!" Kara said, tears spilling from her cheeks. Nova started bawling and Kara and Alex pulled her into a giant hug. When they stopped crying, they walked back to where Eliza was with Mike.

They finally got there and there was a big black van waiting for them. Eliza stepped out of the back of it. "Girls, there's something I need to tell you about my work. But first I need you to come with me."
