Chapter 8

Two Weeks Later...

Kara sat at her desk. Typing away on her laptop. She checked the time. 8:56 PM. She was about to continue typing when her phone chimed. She picked it up. Mike texted her.

M - Hey, are u busy?

K - No. Why?

M - Look out your window...

Kara got up and looked out her window. Mike was waving at her, his phone in his hand. Kara's phone rang. She ran over and picked it up.

"Surprise!" Mike said.

"Are you crazy?!" Kara laughed.

"Kind of" he laughed back, "now get down here, and wear something warm." Mike hung up and Kara changed into jeans, a t-shirt and a sweater. She grabbed her phone and tiptoed downstairs and out the front door. Mike was waiting there for her. As soon as he saw her he pulled her into an embrace and kissed her. She pulled back and laughed.

"What are you doing?" She asked. Mike took her hand and led her to his truck. He opened the door.

"I'm taking you on an official date" he smiled. Kara laughed and stepped into the truck. Mike shut the door and ran around to the other side and got in. He started the engine.

"Where are we going?" Kara asked.

"It's a surprise" Mike replied and drove off. They drove down a dirt road for a few minutes, then they got to a lake. Mike backed up so that the back of the truck was facing the lake. Then Mike stopped the engine and got out, "just wait in here for a minute" Mike said before closing the door and running to the back of the truck. She heard him rummaging through things. After a minute or so, Mike called to her. Kara stepped out of the car and went around to the back. The trunk was open and there were blankets and pillows on the truck bed. There were white lights lining the sides and Mike was sitting on one side with brownies and a thermos in front of him. "Surprise" he smiled. Kara covered her mouth with her hand.

"This is amazing" She said. Mike held out his hand and helped her up, she sat down next to him and he offered her a brownie. She took a bite and the sweet taste of chocolate filled her mouth. "Did you make these?" She asked. Mike scratched the back of his neck and nodded. "They are so good!" She exclaimed. Mike and Kara finished all of the brownies and Mike poured hot chocolate out of a thermos.

"So, Mike Matthews." Kara started, "what's your story?"

"Well, my parents died when I was 15. I was in the system for a year, and just last year, the Matthews adopted me." Mike said, looking up at the stars.

"I'm so sorry." Kara said.

"It was a while ago, and they weren't very good parents anyways. What about you?"

"My parents died when I was 13. The Danvers were friends with my family so they adopted me. And now I'm here." Kara said.

"And what about Nova. You care about her a lot."

"Her parents died too, when she was 9. She's been in the system ever since. So we took her in." Mike nodded. They laid down and looked up at the stars. They reflected in the lake and it looked like they were everywhere. The air got colder and Kara shivered.

"Here," Mike said as he sat up and took off his pullover, Kara sat up as well and Mike helped her put it on. They layed back down and Mike pulled a blanket over them and Kara rested her head on Mike's chest. They talked about their lives and school. Kara felt sad that she couldn't tell him the real story of her childhood. About Krypton and Daxem, and about Nova. But he wouldn't believe her. He would think she's crazy and he would never love her.
