First Of All, What Is Dry Shampoo?
Dry shampoo is basically a product that claims to clean your hair in a powder form with the absence of water.

How Does It Work?
Dry shampoos tend to have starches or alcohols which soak up excess oil on the hair.

How To Use?
Dry shampoo can come in 2 different forms:

The first is in an aerosol spray can. Only dry shampoo on dry hair. Start off by shaking the can and spraying it directly into your roots. Do this with your hair flipped upside down for more volume. If your hair is straight, you can brush out the dry shampoo to equally distribute it, but you don’t have to. After rubbing your scalp in circular motions, you can just flip your hair upside down and shake it out. That’s definitely a must for wavy, curly, or coily hair.

The second kind is in a physical powder form. With this, just put some in the palm of your hand and apply it to the greasy parts of your hair evenly. Rub your hair and scalp in circular motions or brush it out.

How Often Can I Dry Shampoo?
This really depends on how often you wash your hair. Avoid using dry shampoo every day and on day 1 of your wash day. Wait until your hair is greasy and actually needs it. If you wash your hair once a week here’s how my routine would go:

Wash Day: No dry shampoo

Day 2: No dry shampoo

Day 3: Dry Shampoo

Day 4: No Dry Shampoo

Day 5: Dry Shampoo

Day 6: No Dry Shampoo

Day 7: Dry Shampoo

*Please don’t dry shampoo more than 3 times a week. You can tweak the routine to fit your personal needs.*

Cleansing?
Because dry shampoos have starches and alcohols, this can dry out your hair, give it a tacky feeling, cause a residue, and sometimes a cast. Since these starches are being applied directly to the scalp, this can cause the pores on your scalp to get clogged up and hinder your hair growth. So, you need to make sure you’re properly cleansing your hair and scalp after using a dry shampoo. You should use a shampoo that’s moderately cleansing if you feel that your hair didn’t get too much build up. Use a clarifying shampoo if you just caked it onto your hair or if it was just a bad textured dry shampoo. Message the shampoo into your scalp gently in circular motions with warm water, making sure to not miss areas like the nape of the neck, behind the ears, or your hairline. Continue with your regular wash day routine.

What Are Some Ingredients For DIY Dry Shampoos?
🔷️Cornstarch

🔶️Cocoa Powder

🔷️4-5 Drops Of Essential oils (Optional)

🔶️Cinnamon

🔷️Baking Soda

🔶️Oatmeal (After being ground up in a food processor)

🔷️Baby Powder

*Pick your ingredients, you don’t have to use all of them, and put it in a small container. Mix together and apply to your hair as usual.*

Do I (Lesley) Use Dry Shampoo?
I currently haven’t used a dry shampoo in 6 months. I don’t plan on doing so, because I really don’t want to take any chances of slowing down my hair growth. But the thing I don’t get is that people say to go longer between washes, the oils are good for your hair. But then they tell you to use a dry shampoo to get rid of the oil, so that’s kind of contradicting the whole thing. Why even use dry shampoo if it can possibly slow your hair growth, and your hair isn’t even getting nourished by your sebum?

*Keep in mind that it’s your choice to use the dry shampoo or not, I am just giving my personal opinion.*

What Are Some Dry Shampoos That I’ve Tried?
I’ve only tried a few shampoos, but here’s my reviews of them:

🔷️Hask's Chia Seed Volumizing Dry Shampoo worked decently well. I wouldn't suggest it to people with a very oily scalp. It gave my hair noticeable volume and didn't leave a cast or reside. The smell is pretty good and it made my hair soft.

🔶️Hask's Monoi Coconut Dry Shampoo works better than the previous product listed. It smells very good and it made my hair soft with the absence of a cast or residue. It helped with oils more than the previous one, but I still wouldn't recommend it to someone with a very oily scalp. It also gave my hair volume.

🔷️Batiste's Coconut & Exotic Tropical Dry Shampoo smelled very good and did soak up the oils. It left my hair with a nasty residue and texture. My hair had mad volume but I just couldn't stand how my hair felt after using it.

🔶️Morrocco Method's Volcanic Powder Dry Shampoo was very expensive and I can't find one nice thing to say about it. It left the worst residue along with a grey cast. It gave me no volume, but soaked up the oils very well.
