"Some text," Ally mumbled huffily as she shoved her phone back into her purse.
Ally had a boyfriend who wasn't really into conversation and when she got a text from him that said he needed to tell her something important she went into hysterics. She was expecting something sweet, like "I love you" or "You are beautiful." Instead, she received a poorly written message asking her to buy him a new video game while she was out.
Jane reached behind her head and tightened her green ponytail. "Told y'all. Guys are jerks, that's why I don't bother myself with them."
"Yeah, Al," I added to the statement. "Besides, you guys haven't been going out for that long."
Ally crossed her arms and cocked an eyebrow. "What about Cameron, huh? He's not a jerk, and he told you he loves you about two weeks after you started going out."
"Cameron doesn't count, he's not a boy. He's.. He's..." I snapped my fingers to call words to my mind. Failing, I continued, "He's Cameron."
Everyone rolled their eyes and turned back to Ally's predicament as Cameron came behind me and wrapped his arms around my chest. He kissed the top of my head and hugged me tighter as he pulled me away from our friends.
I sighed and twisted his arm to get a glance at his watch. "What time is it?"
Cameron unlaced his arms from around me and checked his watch. "Three thirty, why?"
I giggled nervously and groped at his hands. "Um, yeah. You have the honor of taking me to church today at five thirty." I winced and shut my eyes, expecting a frustrated remark.
"Alright, cool."
I opened my eyes. "Yeah?"
He laughed at my surprise. "Shailene, it's not that big a deal. I've been to mass with your family loads of times."
"Cool." I said as I smiled up at him.
The truth is I knew that he didn't mind going to my church. His family never really went and he liked to come with us. I always thought it was really funny because he never really understood the readings so, afterwards he would love to converse about it and figure them out.
Cameron slipped his arm around my waist and tugged me back farther.
"So, are your parents gonna let us sit together?"
I snorted. "Not likely. They don't want to get us 'distracted'." I made the air quotes with my fingers at the word "distracted."
He ran his finger up my spine and twisted around to face me. Smiling he said, "Well, anyone would get distracted by your beautiful face."
I felt my cheeks heat up and redden at his words. His eyes softened and he chuckled as he cupped his hands on my jawline and cheeks. Cameron rubbed his thumbs in circular motions on my face and stared into my eyes.
"See how distracted I am?"
I laughed nervously. "Yeah, yes. I.. uh... I really do."
He bent down touched his lips to mine. I felt him smile against my lips before he molded them into mine. His lips were warm and soft, and felt good, as I kissed him harder and laid my hands on is hips.
"Hey, lovebirds."
My gravity shifted from Cameron back to planet Earth as we resurfaced from our kiss. The group stood in front of us with folded arms.
Jane stepped forward. "Get a room, you two. I'm tellin' you this whole 'make-out' thing you do is going to get you in trouble with security or something."
Everybody nodded and murmered in agreement. Suddenly, the group split apart into two, pulling us with them. They pushed and pulled Cameron and me in various directions, shouting about an intervention. After we were split into gender specific groups Jamie, who was usually introverted, walked and stood in between them.
She smiled and spoke up with a loud voice. "Today we are staging an intervention! Cam, Shai, I'm sorry to say this, but, you're too in love. You need to stop."
I rolled my eyes and stubbornly crossed my arms on my chest.
Jamie spun around and addressed the group of boys, "Cameron, Kyle, Liam, Ian, Mikey, here are your rules: you may do what ever boy-ish activity you like," she winked flirtatiously, "and no cheating." Jamie twisted to face the group I belonged in. "Ladies: Shailene, Ally, C, Jane, same rules apply to you." A sick grin consumed her face. "And as an added bonus, since this is a love intervention, there will be no interaction concerning the opposite sex with any flirtatious intention." She snapped and gave us thumbs-up before strutting back to our division and melting back in.
Cameron and I exchanged pained glances as our friends pulled us further and further away from each other. I was upset that we couldn't be together that day. He was really all I ever thought about and I wanted him back physically in my arms.
I turned my attention back to my freinds. "So? We are, basically, having a 'girls' day out?'"
Ally whipped her blonde head around and met my stare with a broad smile. "Exactly!"
