I ran as fast as I could through the park. In a matter of seconds, I was back at the swing set, he was just a few paces behind me. Indeed, he was faster than me, but he just wanted me to feel like I was fast, for once. While he was still behind me I ran up to the same swing he was on earlier and I sat down. I smiled innocently at him when he had made his way back.
He chuckled at me and asked, “Do you want me to push you?”
I gave him my best “puppy dog face” and said, “Yes, please.”
He came towards me with a smirk on his face and patted my head as if I really was a puppy. He went behind me and grabbed both of the chains on the swing on either side of my hips and pulled. He brought me up above his head with ease. It was then that I realized how high the swing would be at its highest point and whispered, to myself, “Oh my God,” repeatedly. I’m sure he heard me because I felt the chains shake a little bit from the reverberations of his laugh. He let go of me and I screamed as I went higher than the top of the swing set. I didn’t expect the swing to, well, swing so fast or go so high. I knew it was coming, I just didn’t get a warning so there wasn’t any hope of me preparing for the swing anyway.
Between laughs he asked, “Do you want me to stop you?”
Laughing, I yelled in reply, “No!”
He chuckled at me and pushed me on the small of my back to make me keep swinging. I blushed and gasped, not expecting his touch, and hoped that he didn’t hear it. If he did, he didn’t say anything, but we both laughed as the ruffles in my dress billowed in the wind.
After a while, his arms got tired so he sat on the swing next to mine while I began to decrease speed and elevation. Finally, I was swinging in time with Anthony. He edged his way next to me, still swinging, took my hand off of the chain and held it. We swung together, hand in hand, with our arms outstretched between us, in silence.
Before I knew it, the sun was trying to hide behind the trees as it began to make itself around the world once again so another place on Earth could experience daylight. After realizing that, I became gloomy. Anthony noticed me looking down at my feet and asked, “What’s wrong?”
I told him, “The sun is starting to set which means I need to start heading home.” I really didn’t want to go home yet, but I didn’t want my parents to freak out either. I looked up at him and saw a look of disappointment on his face, then in a blink of an eye, his face showed me that he had an idea. “What is it?” I asked.
“You’ll see.” Then he winked at me.
I was astonished to see him happy that we had to leave. He let go of my hand and started walking away. I jumped up off of the swing and followed him. When I caught up with him, he instantly grabbed my hand and I squeezed his.
“Where are we going, Anthony?”
“You’ll see, sweet Sophie.”
I decided to just shut up and go with the flow.
