The little bell jingled above the door, signalling the arrival of a customer to the motel. Norman was manning the front desk today, so you were free to relax in the parlour with a book you were dying to get started on. There had only been one or two customers today so far.
You weren't really listening as Norman went through all the usual formalities. You were absorbed in the story you were reading, so the interaction out front was nothing more than background noise. You perked up, though, as you registered the conversation taking an interesting turn.
"Lotta people go missin' 'round these parts, huh?" The stranger said.
You looked up from your book and saw a tall man standing at the front desk. He didn't look too old, with a scraggly beard and hair tied back in a ponytail. He was wearing a cowboy hat and the rest of his outfit strongly showed his fondness for the wild west. He was imposing and something about how casual he sounded rubbed you the wrong way. You looked back to your book, continuing to eavesdrop.
"Yes," Norman answered. "It's...very strange."
"Sure is. Don't suppose you'd know anything about it?"
"I... Wh-Why would I know anything...?"
"Motel owners, they sometimes overhear the local chatter. Figured you might have heard something."
"Oh. Well...we don't get many locals. They moved the highway, so..."
"Oh, did they? Thought this place was kinda outta the way. Pretty...secluded, ain't it?"
"Yeah."
"Not likely someone would notice if something happened out here."
"I-I guess not."
"So has something happened out here?"
"What? I don't understand..."
"I think you understand me perfectly."
"Let me just get you your room key and--"
"Answer the question, Bates."
You had heard enough. You tossed your book aside and disengaged the brakes on your wheelchair, rolling out into the main office. The stranger looked surprised, like he hadn't known anyone else was in the office.
"I'm sorry, is there a problem here, sir?" You said, your tone accusatory.
"No, no problem at all. Me and Bates were just havin' a pleasant little chat," he replied, trying to charm you with a roguish smile.
You were having none of it.
"It sounded more like an interrogation to me," you said. "Are you with the police?"
"Well, no, but I--"
"Then you have no business asking such intrusive and accusatory questions. Either accept your room key or leave."
To say the man looked shocked was an understatement. He stared at you for a moment, dumbfounded, before turning back to Norman.
"Can't even stand up for yourself, can you, Bates?" The man sneered. "Gotta have a cripple do all the work for you, huh?"
You glanced at Norman and he looked pretty shaken. He practically shrank under the man's hard gaze, looking everywhere but at him. You took Norman's hand in yours, giving it a light squeeze to let him know everything would be okay.
You glared at the man. "Get out."
He blinked. "What?"
"You heard me. Get out. Take your business elsewhere."
The man stood there for a minute or two before he readjusted his jacket in a huffy manner.
"Fine. Didn't wanna stay in your cheap motel anyway."
And with that, he stormed out of the office. You heard the sound of an engine starting up before it drove away. The office was quiet once more. You looked back at Norman, giving his hand another squeeze.
"You okay?" You asked.
"Yeah, I'm... I'm fine," Norman mumbled under his breath.
"Hey, it's okay to be upset," you said. "That guy was a major jerk."
"Yeah, I just..." Norman trailed off, letting out a sigh.
"What is it, Norman?"
"I just...wish he hadn't said what he did to you."
"What, the cripple jab?" You waved a hand. "Like I haven't heard that before. It's nothing, really."
"Are you sure?" Norman said. "I-I don't want you to feel like you're...you're useless or anything..."
"I don't feel useless at all, Norman. I know my limits. I know there are things that I can do and things that I can't. That's just the way things are and I'm fine with that," you said, giving him a reassuring smile.
Norman was more distressed over you getting insulted than himself, and you found his concern to be adorable. You knew your chair was an easy target for attacks, but you never let it get to you. If you did, you'd probably never go outside and you knew that wasn't an option. There would always be mean people in the world, but as long as you kept your spirits up, you knew you could never be broken.
"Besides, I've got a cute boy to help me with the things I can't do," you said, trying to lighten the mood.
And you were successful. Norman got that shy little smile that you loved so much, his eyes directed firmly at the floor. You chuckled and lightly pulled him forward, pecking him on the cheek. Norman pressed the softest of kisses to your forehead in response. Your smile only grew wider.
The rest of the day was quiet. Norman spent it with you back in the parlour, content with the comfortable silence while you continued your book. You knew Norman loved these calm, quiet moments. They were very rare for him, as Mother was usually a constant presence in the back of his mind. Sometimes, however, when the world was quiet and the two of you were together, Norman could relax without the complaints of Mother filling his head.
And by the time night fell, the memories of that rude stranger had practically faded from both your minds. You barely even gave his comments a second thought as Norman helped wheel you up the stairs to the house. And once you were inside, you couldn't help but tease Norman just a little.
"Thanks for the help, cutie," you said with a wink.
You smiled as Norman rubbed the back of his neck, his face turning pink. He stammered about how he was going to go start dinner before tripping over his own feet on the way to the kitchen.
Cutie indeed, you thought.
