You fumbled with your keys in a clumsy attempt to unlock your apartment door. Today was not your day. First you wound up working overtime – way overtime – and then on the drive home, an accident halted traffic for what felt like forever. Then, for the perfect end to a perfectly terrible day, the elevator was out of order, forcing you to climb five flights of stairs. You were tired and cranky and all you wanted to do was climb into bed and sleep your troubles away.
You finally managed to open your door, but was startled as you saw Chucky sitting on the floor in front of you. He looked sad, sadder than you thought a robotic doll was capable of looking. Had he been waiting for you all this time?
"Everything okay, buddy?" You asked him.
"You didn't come back when you usually do," Chucky answered in a saddened voice.
"I know, I'm sorry. Work was crazy and there was a car accident on the way home... It was a bad day," you explained.
You walked into the living room and Chucky followed you. You collapsed onto the couch, thankful that you were finally home. Chucky approached the edge of the couch, giving a tug on your pant leg. You lifted him up, setting him on the couch beside you. Immediately, the doll snuggled into your side, clutching tightly onto your arm. This was nothing new, as Chucky was normally clingy, but something about this felt...different.
"Something going on?" You asked gently.
"You didn't come back," he repeated. His voice was muffled, his face buried in your arm. "I thought something happened to you."
"Oh, you don't need to worry, Chuck," you said. You reached over with your other hand, lightly petting his hair. "Nothing's gonna happen to me, alright?"
"But you didn't come back!"
Chucky looked up at you and you were taken aback by how distraught he looked. You picked him up and set him on your lap, delicately holding his tiny hands. You saw a faint flicker of red in his blue eyes, his emotional coding undoubtedly kicking into overdrive.
"Hey, it's okay," you reassured him. "I'm here now. Nothing bad happened. If I ever get held up like that again, I'll make sure to call home. I promise."
"I thought you left me!" Chucky blurted out.
You blinked. "Wh-What...?"
"I thought you abandoned me," Chucky continued, his voice softer, hurt. "I thought you left and were never coming back. I thought you didn't want me anymore. I thought I was too broken for you. I thought you left me. I thought-- I thought-- I thought--"
The doll's anxious ramblings were interrupted as his voice synthesizer glitched, jamming him in a vocal loop. You picked him up once more and held him close. Your hug seemed to unjam whatever had gotten stuck and Chucky fell silent, save for the quiet whirring of his servos as his arms moved to wrap around your neck.
"I was scared," Chucky said, his voice no louder than a whisper. There was an uneven hitch in his tone, like there would be if he was able to cry. "I was s-so scared you didn't...you didn't like me anymore. Like... Like I wasn't enough for you."
"Chucky..." You didn't know what to say. You knew the doll didn't like to be alone, but you had no idea his separation anxiety was this bad.
You continued to hold him as a heavy silence fell over the room. You could hear every quiet click and hum every time Chucky would move in the slightest. The power core in the centre of his chest was incredibly hot, enough for you to feel the heat through the doll's clothes. Another sign of how worked up he was over this. You hoped he wouldn't overheat again. You weren't exactly a master with electronics.
"Y/N..." You heard Chucky whimper after a while.
"I'm here, buddy. What's up?"
"Do I... D-Do I still...make you happy...?" He choked out.
"Of course, of course you do," you instantly replied, hugging the little doll closer. "You make me happy every single day."
"We...have fun?"
"Always. Things would be pretty dull around here without you."
You felt Chucky's small hands push himself back from your shoulder. He stared at you with wide, vulnerable eyes, desperately searching your face for a reason unknown to you.
"You're not lying?" He asked timidly.
"I'd never lie about something like this," you said, hoping to soothe his paranoia with your words. "I love having you around, Chucky. You make me happy and I promise, I would never, ever want to leave you."
Chucky was quiet for a moment, continuing to study your face for signs of sincerity. You knew he was programmed to recognize countless facial expressions, so you hoped his coding would eventually pick up that you were serious, that you meant every word you said.
After a few more moments, Chucky snuggled back into your embrace, hiding his face in your shoulder once more. You held him just as close as before, a hand gently stroking over his hair and down his back. Conventional ways of comforting a human, but you hoped they would work for robotic dolls as well.
"I'm sorry," you heard Chucky mumble.
"You have nothing to be sorry for," you said softly. "It's okay to be scared, to worry about friends. You don't have to apologize for that."
"You're my best friend, Y/N," Chucky whispered.
You smiled. "You're my best friend, too, Chucky."
A pause.
"Can we stay like this? Can we stay like this all night?"
"Of course, bud. Whatever you need."
And within only a few minutes, the heat emanating from Chucky's power core had almost completely dissipated.
