A heavy sigh left your lips as you finished up with your last file of the day. A local prison wanted a psych eval on one of their newest inmates to determine whether he needed to be moved to a more secure facility or not. They had sent you the file and requested a writeup by the end of the week. You thought that deadline was very generous. It gave you more than enough time to make sure your report was well thought out and as accurate as possible.
Unfortunately, you had lost track of time and wound up staying at the office late. It was a building you shared with several other psychologists. You hated making the janitor stick around late to vacuum your office, but sometimes, time just got away.
There was one more reason you tried to avoid staying overtime. Namely, Dr. Hannibal Lecter.
He always stayed late. You didn't know what he could possibly be doing that made him stay overtime every single day, but sure enough, if you left the office late, he would be there. And it wasn't that Dr. Lecter was an awful person. He wasn't mean or rude. He was a very intelligent man with an incredible talent in psychology, if a bit pretentious. If anything, he was pleasant enough company.
The terrible thing was that you were absolutely head over heels for him.
When you first came to term with these feelings, you decided that he could never know. How insufferable he would be if he ever found out. And the fact that you shared the same work building... You did not need office romance drama thrown into the mix.
You knew your only course of action was avoidance. A brilliant psychologist like him wouldn't need long to figure out what was going on with you. You could practically hear the gentle way he would address the situation before quietly letting you down. There was no way he'd reciprocate your feelings. Just no way.
You grabbed your things from your office before slipping into the hall. Walking swiftly toward the front door, you hoped that maybe you could escape without incident. Of course, no such luck. Stepping outside, the first thing you noticed was the rain. It was a torrential downpour and you were without your umbrella. The second thing you noticed was that there was somebody waiting beneath the overhang that shadowed the front door.
Dr. Lecter smiled warmly at you. "Dr. Y/L/N."
You managed something of a smile in return. "Dr. Lecter. You're here awful late."
"I could say the same to you," he replied.
"Just...lost track of time, I guess," you said. The excuse sounded flimsier than you intended. "You?"
"The weather reports said it might rain tonight. I noticed when you came in this morning, you were without an umbrella," he explained. He gestured to the black umbrella in his hand.
You must've done a poor job of hiding your shock as Dr. Lecter chuckled softly. He tapped a finger to his temple.
"I'm very observant. It's a gift of mine," he said.
"So I see," you said. "That was nice, but you didn't have to wait for me. I could've grabbed a cab or something."
"And pay them to drive you just down the street?"
You raised an eyebrow. "You know where I live?"
"I see how that might sound strange," Dr. Lecter admitted. "I've simply noticed that you walk to work instead of driving. You must live close, I surmised."
"Astutely observed, Doctor. Mine's the house on the corner, actually."
"No sense in paying for a cab, then, is there?"
"I suppose not. Very well, then. You may have the honour of walking me home, Dr. Lecter."
A pleased smile played on the good doctor's lips. He opened the umbrella and ushered you close, ensuring that you were both protected as you stepped out into the rain. Walking so close with him, you couldn't help but feel a little nervous.
"Something the matter, Dr. Y/LN?" Dr. Lecter asked.
"No," you answered, perhaps a little too quickly. "Why?"
"You've grown awfully quiet," he said.
You let out a little laugh. "We literally just left."
"True. But the question caught you off guard, didn't it?" He glanced at you from the corner of his eye.
"Wait, are you..." You stumbled slightly over your words. "You're trying to get in my head right now, aren't you?"
"'Perhaps," Dr. Lecter responded, a touch of coyness in his voice. "Is it working?"
"That depends. Do you want it to?" You answered with a smile.
"Why, Dr. Y/L/N, are you flirting with me?" Dr. Lecter asked with a mock scandalized tone.
"What? No, of course not," you replied with a nervous little giggle. "This is just...playful banter between colleagues. That's all."
"Oh, of course. That's all."
You knew he didn't believe you for a second. The cocky smirk on his face gave it all away. Way to play it cool, you thought. Foolishly, you had hoped you'd be able to keep your infatuation with Hannibal Lecter a secret, but of course, he had read you like an open book within minutes. After tonight, you had no idea how you'd be able to face him again without turning bright red.
Since your house was so close, you didn't have to endure the awkward conversation that was sure to follow. You turned to face Dr. Lecter, but found it too intimidating to meet his eyes.
"Thank you for walking me home, Dr. Lecter. That was very kind of you," you said.
"You're more than welcome," he said. "And one more thing, Y/N?"
Here it comes, you thought. The rejection. He's going to tell you how flattered he is that you like him before letting you down gently. You could practically hear it and braced yourself for the crushing embarrassment that would ensue.
You felt a light touch underneath your chin, guiding your head up until you met Dr. Lecter's clear blue eyes. He simply stared at you for a moment and you felt hypnotized by his gaze.
"The next time you're inclined to flirt with me, I might just consider flirting back," he said to you, his voice barely above a whisper.
The surreality of the moment was only enforced as he leaned close and placed a kiss on your cheek. And then, he turned and walked away without another word. You were left standing on your doorstep, feeling dazed and confused and more than a little hopeful. The ghost of his touch lingered on your skin and you found yourself smiling uncontrollably as you unlocked your front door and slipped inside.
