Song Preference: A Story To Tell Your Friends

Calum:

I can't fall asleep knowing you're not home

You changed into your pyjamas, all the while trying to calculate what time it is wherever Calum was - you lost track of which country he was in when, and what the time difference was between him and you. Either way, it was past midnight here, so you figured it was not the best time to be calling him anyway as he would only tell you to go to sleep. Somehow Calum could always keep track of what time it was where you were. Sighing, you sunk into your bed, glancing over at the side where Calum normally lay before closing your eyes. Tossing and turning, you finally gave up trying to sleep about an hour later; every time you shut your eyes, all you saw was Calum. Eventually, you sat up and grabbed your phone from your bedside table, where it was charging, and dialed Calum's number, not even caring about the time by this point - you just needed to hear his voice, to pretend he was still there with you.

"Y/N?" Calum answered almost immediately. "I wanted to call you, but I thought you'd be sleeping!"

Just the sound of his voice made you relax. "I tried, I just can't sleep without you here," you told him honestly.

"Want me to stay talking with you until you can fall asleep?" Calum asked, and you could hear the smile in his voice. You nodded before remembering that he couldn't see you and answering 'yes'. You spent the next forty minutes listening to your boyfriend tell you stories from tour and listing all of the places he wanted to take you someday, before you finally felt peaceful enough to sleep.

Ashton (his POV):

Tonight you'll cry yourself to sleep / As I lay awake in some far-off city

It had been nearly one month since I had broken up with Y/N, and I regretted it with every moment that passed. At the time, she had told me that she understood - I had to end things, because I didn't feel like it was fair to either one of us to have to constantly be saying goodbye because of touring. I hated having to only see her through a computer screen, I hated not being able to speak to her for days at a time because it always clashed with interviews or gigs, I hated only having a couple of weeks at a time with her before having to watch her cry as we said goodbye at the airport.

I was lying awake in my bunk on the tour bus while the other guys slept peacefully. I couldn't even remember which country we were in at the moment - all I could think about was the look on her face when I told her it was over. Even now, nearly four weeks over, it still broke my heart the same way I could tell it broke her. My fingers kept hovering over Y/N's name on my phone. I wondered what she was doing now - she still kept in touch with the boys, and MIchael had told me that she was crying herself to sleep a lot since the breakup. I wished I could be there with her to take the pain away, to comfort her, but I knew that being with her or getting back together would only result in another ending. Silently, I turned my phone off; I couldn't cope with another ending. The first one was hard enough.

Luke:

Don't go away again / I want to be more than a phone call at 4am

I stood in the airport, my hands intertwined with Luke's as I avoided his gaze. Calum, Ashton and Michael had all moved slightly away from the two of us, giving us the privacy that I was now ignoring. I didn't want to look at him, because I knew that when I did I would get emotional about him leaving; I just wanted to hold myself together long enough for Luke to catch his flight without feeling guilty. I had been hoping that he wouldn't notice, but the second the thought popped into my mind, Luke's hand slipped out of mine and lifted my chin, trying to get me to look at him. Still, I continued to avoid his gaze.

Luke sighed. "Why won't you look at me?"

HIs voice cracked, and I couldn't ignore him any more. I looked into his blue eyes and, sure enough, started to feel emotions overwhelming me. "I just - I didn't want to cry in front of you," I said, although I wasn't sure if he could actually hear my words through the tears. Immediately, Luke pulled me towards him, wrapping his arms around me as he stroked my hair gently. "Don't leave," I whispered, even though I knew how selfish I was to want to keep my boyfriend with me instead of leaving to live his dream.

"I have to," Luke mumbled into my hair, "but I'll call you every day, I promise."

I shook my head, still crying. "I want to be more than a phone call, Luke."

Luke pulled away, smiling weakly as he wiped the tears from my eyes, and I could see some tears threatening to spill from his own eyes. "You are more than a phone call. You're the person I'll be thinking about every minute of this tour, the person I'll dedicate every song to, and the person I get to come home to at the end of it, okay?"

Instead of answering, I tugged him into another hug. "I love you."

Michael (His POV):

It was the type of feeling that can't be explained / The way she moved her lips and it drove me insane

It had been more than six months since I had last seen Y/N, and she was meant to be here in less than ten minutes. I stood in front of the mirror, checking that I looked okay when Calum walked past, rolling his eyes as he noticed me. "Stop messing around with your hair, she already likes you so it's not going to make a difference, mate."

I heard a knock on the front door and, ignoring Calum, double-checking my hair before running down the hallway to the front door. When I opened it, Y/N was standing there, looking as perfect as usual, her eyes widening as she saw me. "You dyed your hair again?" she exclaimed.

"Hello to you, too," I smirked before stepping back to let her in. I wasn't sure where the rest of the guys had disappeared to, but I was thankful for the time alone with Y/N as she recounted hundreds stories of things I had missed while touring, which she also asked me a lot about. As she launched into yet another story, I pretended to listen, but instead became mesmerised by the way her eyes crinkled as she laughed, the way she smiled and the way her lips moved as she spoke rapidly. Without thinking it through - I knew that if I did, I would probably end up chickening out at the last second - I leaned forward and connected my lips with Y/N's. After the initial shock, she kissed me back, and when I pulled away she was smiling.

"Took you long enough, Clifford." Calum winked at me from the doorway.

"Fuck off, Hood," I swore before kissing Y/N again.
