      Ace

I watch her happy expression as it quickly turns to sad as servants avoid her.

Why did they have to choose me?

I am suddenly filled with guilt. Technically I am the one who chose her. I am the one who proposed the idea of living with humans in peace, but it is for all for her. I was asked by her parents a long time ago to protect her and I promised I would. But back then I didn't, I couldn't. She was locked away from me. When I was younger I barely saw any servants and when I did they were never her, but, when my father said I could choose who I wanted to marry, I knew this was my chance to protect her to make sure she feels safe and loved. So I said that everyone should see that humans and our kind can get along, that we are not a danger to their existence. Because as much as we love them being afraid of us, I know our kind sometimes wishes that humans weren't afraid and so I was told I could choose a human girl and without any hesitance I chose her.

"Ace!" her soft voice snaps me out of my thoughts and I look at her.  The dress my mother bought for her fits her well. Is something wrong? Is he okay?  Worried thoughts run through her head.  Aiyana worried about me? This must be a dream. "Is everything alright?" she asks. I smile and nod.

"Yeah, come on, I want to show you something," I offer her my hand. She stands up and takes it,  seeming a little stunned. I know she thinks it's impossible for me to be kind, but she's wrong. I can be nice, but only to her. She deserves that much. She seemed so shocked when I announced it's her birthday. She probably doesn't even know what age she's turning--23. Four years younger than me.

"Ace?" she calls my name as we walk. I look at her so she knows she has my attention. "Who were the other girls, was one named Hannah? She was my best friend and went missing a while ago,"  A pang of guilt hit my chest. There were no other girls. I told her that so she'd get scared. Why would I scare someone I'm trying to protect you may ask. Well because. . . to be honest, at first, I resisted my duty to protect her. But when I started to see who she is I knew I couldn't abandon my mission to protect her.

"No, I'm sorry," I lower my head. She frowns and her hand tightens around mine. I look at our intertwined fingers. I give her hand a squeeze in response. This poor girl.

Where could she be? Why would my best friend leave me?

I sigh. Damn it Ace! It's her birthday! You have to do something to cheer her up!

I stop walking making her stop as well. She looks at me with wonder.

"Is something wrong?" she asks. I facepalm with my free hand. What are you doing? "Ace?" I look at her emerald green eyes. The same eye color as her mothers when she begged me to take care of her daughter.

"Where do you want to go?" I ask. She looks at me still confused.

"I'm sorry, what? Did you just ask me where do I want to go?" she tilts her head to the left.

"Yeah, it's your birthday, where do you want to go?" I ask again. She smiles.

"It's really sweet you're doing this for my birthday, alright, I've never been the UK and it's somewhere I've always wanted to go but never had the chance," she answers shyly. I grin.

"To the UK it is," I say. She looks at me in shock.

"Wait, really!" she exclaims. I laugh and nod. She squeals in delight. I can only laugh once again. She really is something.

I take us back to our room and start to pack.

"Wait what am suppose to take if I don't have any clothes?" she asks.

"Don't worry about that," I tell her ruffling her hair. She glares at me while she fixes her hair. I smile and she does as well. God my parents are going to kill me. I am not going to tell them I'm doing this because then they wouldn't let me so, uh. . . yeah, I'm going to die after this trip is over.

"How long are we going to be there?" she asks.

"One week," I reply. She beams with happiness. I can finally get away, I can finally be free. I sigh. She keeps on thinking she's going to escape but she's not. As much as I am against keeping her imprisoned I am loyal to my parents and I'm not going to let that happen,

I lead her outside the mansion and she immediately begins to cough. Oh, right humans need oxygen. I take her to the stables.

"Do you know how to ride a horse?" I ask her. She coughs but nods. I tack up her an Appaloosa horse and she hops on. I tack up a black stallion for myself and get on it as well. I start to ride as does Aiyana closely behind still coughing up a storm. I run into a forest. If I am correct, trees provide oxygen and humans breathe in that oxygen. Aiyana slowly stops coughing as we ride.

"Do you even know where you're going!" She yells. I pull on the reins to stop the horse. She does the same.

"Yes, but as I'm sure you know, we have to cross an ocean to get there which means we'll have to get on a boat," I tell her and then continue on and she follows. What am I getting myself into?
