Chapter 26: The Faces in the Sky

Holly’s POV

As Liam, Jennifer and I set up camp in a cave near the clearing where we found Jennifer, I take a moment to look up to the sky as the Capitol seal comes into view.

“The sky!” I shout.

Within a moment, Liam and Jennifer are at the mouth of the cave with me, staring up into the starry sky.

“I wonder how many were killed in the bloodbath.” Jennifer says.

“Did you kill any?” I ask her.

Jennifer shakes her head.

“Liam?” I ask.

Liam looks uncomfortable.

“How many did you kill?!” I ask him.

His voice is barely audible. “Two.” He whispers.

I can barely look at him. “Who?!” I demand.

“6 and 10.” He says.

I think this over in my mind. District six and District ten. “Cammie and James?” I ask.

Liam nods.

Even though I didn’t know either of them, I’m still angry at him.

I look up at the sky just in time to see the faces appearing.

First is Carlen, District 5. Then Cammie, District 6. As her face disappears, I can see the guilt in Liam’s eyes and I feel bad for getting angry at him. Next comes Kaelin, District 8. Then Zacharius, District 9. Then comes James, District 10. Liam’s face is clouded with guilt and he walks back into the cave, just to get away from Jennifer and me, I think. The next face is Lillie Heavensbee’s and I can’t help thinking about how devastated Katniss must be. She was good friends with Lillie’s uncle.

Then the anthem plays and realisation dawns on me. Six tributes are already dead.

Everyone left, bar me, Pearl, Halle and Silk, is related to past victors.

I’m dead.

The next morning when I wake, I notice Liam isn’t in the cave.

Jennifer is at the mouth of the cave, staring out anxiously.

“Where’s Liam?” I ask, walking over to her.

She shrugs her shoulders. “He was gone before I woke up. He could be dead! We don’t even know! We won’t know until this evening!”

“Jennifer! Calm down!” I say.

She nods and takes some deep breaths.

We pack up our things and venture into the woods.

We’ve been walking for a while when I hear  the rustling of leaves behind me.

I spin around and by the skin of my teeth, avoid a spear aimed at my head.

I look into the distance and see a flash of blonde hair.

I know it’s Silk, and Ree is probably with her.

“Jennifer!” I shout. “Run! The Careers are upon us.”

“No baby H. No more running! Let’s end this right now!”

Jennifer is handy with an axe, just like her mother and has two with her, which she swiped from the Cornucopia in the midst of the bloodbath.

She expertly flings one of them and it sails through the air and hits Silk squarely in the chest, killing her instantly.

“You little . . .!” Ree is bubbling with rage and her knives are flying at us quickly.

One hits me in my calf and I’m sent reeling into a tree.

Out of nowhere, I see someone fall from a tree and something flying in Ree’s direction.

And I black out.
