Chapter 32: You can NOT be Serious!
Holly’s POV
We told everyone that I wanted to find out who’d framed my Dad, and they all said they wanted in.
Well. Almost everyone. Logan was determined to keep me out of it and Liam was determined to keep Jen out of it. But the two of us stood strong, and in the end, we had the last laugh.
Mrs Mason, who I’m really supposed to call Johanna, is so cool, just like Jen and she and Annie have been really helpful.
Recently, we spoke with the Mayor, and he released a statement saying that everyone is District 12 had to have their fingerprints recorded as they had found one of my mother’s shoes near the lake where they’d found her body and they had fingerprints from the shoe.
And now, we’re on our way to the Justice Building for me to meet with the Mayor and get the results of the fingerprints.

“I’ll go by myself.” I tell everyone.
“I’ll come with you.” Logan tells me.
I nod. “Ok.”
We enter Mayor Dunsten’s office and he invites us to sit down.
“Now Holly,” He starts. “We found two different fingerprints on your mother’s shoe and they match with two people currently in District 12.”
“That’s great!” I say.
“But the problem is, one of them wasn’t born in District 12. She’s from District 7.”
“What difference does that make?” I ask.
“Well, it means she can’t stand any kind of trial here.”
“Well do you think it would be possible for us to have the names before we decide what to do with them?” I ask. “I’m sure I could get someone to come with me to ask them some questions before the Peacekeepers have anything to do with the matter.”
“Of course Miss Hawthorne. I couldn’t agree more.” Says Mayor Dunsten.
“So who are the two?” I ask.
“Right yes. The fingerprints we discovered on the shoe match up to the fingerprint samples we took from Jennifer Mason and Peeta Mellark.”
I have no idea what my face must have looked like when he told me whose fingerprint samples the shoe matched up to.
“There must be a mistake.” I say, trying to figure it out in my head.
“There’s no mistake Miss Hawthorne. We used the most high tech equipment to discover the fingerprints on the shoe. You could see the photographs if you’d like.”
I nod.
“Very well. Follow me please.” Mayor Dunsten says and we leave through the door.
I can’t bear to look up as we pass everyone in the hallway so I keep my eyes glued to the floor and I follow Mayor Dunsten’s shoes.
“Ok, here you go Holly.” Mayor Dunsten says, showing me two pictures.
I nod, taking the pictures in.
“The one on the top is from the shoe.” Mayor Dunsten says.
He holds one up. “This is Miss Mason’s.”
He then hands me the other.
“This one is Mr Mellark’s.”
I nod. “Thank you Mayor. I’ll be round before the end of the week to visit my father. Perhaps I’ll come by then to tell you what I’ve decided to do.”
Mayor Dunsten nods. “Very well Miss Hawthorne. Have a nice day.”
I nod. “You too Mayor.”
The walk home is awkward and I don’t say anything. I just walk quickly, clutching Logan’s hand.
When we get back to the house, I run up to my room and lock the door.
Logan’s POV
“What’s wrong with her?!” Jennifer asks.
“She’s shocked. As am I.” I tell her.
“Whose samples did the fingerprints match?” Willow asks.
I hand her the photographs Mayor Dunsten gave Holly. She gasps.
“Now I get it.” She says.
“Get what?!” Liam asks.
“They found two prints on Mrs Hawthorne’s shoe. And they match two people in District 12.” I explain.
“But surely that’s a good thing right?” Jennifer asks. “Why is she so upset?”
“I think I know.” My mother says. “Logan, whose fingerprints do they match?”
“Jennifer’s and Dad’s.” I whisper.
“Oh my God.” Liam whispers.
“Yep. Now you get why she’s so upset.” I say.
Everyone starts talking and I notice Dad leaving the room quietly.
