Chapter 35: Finnick

Jennifer’s POV

“Are you sure?” Liam asks.

I gulp and nod my head.

He looks at me for a few moments before his face breaks into a smile.

I sigh in relief.

“Why were you so worried?” He asks, chuckling.

“Well you’re kind of intimidating.” I say.

He nods. “Right. Says the girl who threatened me with my own weapon in the Hunger Games.”

“I did not threaten you. I simply told you to be careful where you threw your weapons.”

“Well don’t you have the utmost respect for humans?” Liam asks sarcastically.

“Respect is gained not given.” I remind him.

“I’ll remember that for future reference.” He says.

I nod and smile.

“Maybe we should tell your parents.” He suggests.

“I was wondering if we could tell your mum first.” I say in a small voice. “It’s just she’s done so much for me; I thought she kind of deserved to know first.”

Liam smiles. “She’ll be thrilled.”

I nod. “I know she will be.”

And how right was Liam?! Annie was absolutely thrilled when we told her.

Now you’re probably wondering what in earth I’m talking about.

And what I’m talking about, is that I’m pregnant.

I’m not sure whether the baby will be a boy or a girl, but we have names for either.

For a boy it will be Finn Liam Odair. We couldn’t call him Finnick because Katniss and Peeta’s son is going to be called Finnick so Finn was the closest we could get.

For a girl, we are thinking either Maggie or Maddison. Her middle name with be Annie.

“Have you told your parents yet?” Annie asks me one morning.

I shake my head.

“Who have you told then?” She asks me.

“You.” I answer plainly.

“So you mean Liam, you and me are the only people who know?!” She asks.

I nod slowly. “Yes . . .”

“You should at least tell your parents. Even if they didn’t believe you about the fingerprints, they should know that they’re future grandparents.”

I nod. “I’m going to go and visit them.” I tell her.

Annie smiles at me. “Good for you.”

I smile and hug her. When I pull back, I see a stray tear slide down her cheek.

“Are you ok?” I ask quietly.

She nods. “It’s like having the daughter I always wanted. Better late than never.”

I smile. “I never really got a chance to tell you.” I start. “I really am sorry about Finnick. I’m sure he would have been a wonderful father.”

Annie nods. “Oh I know he would have been. The scariest thing, is that Liam is exactly like him.”

“Why didn’t you ever re-marry after Finnick . . . you know . . .” I trail off. “It wouldn’t have been hard for you.”

She chuckles. “I believed back then, and I suppose I still do, that there is really only room in a person’s life for one person they can truly share their entire existence with. You only open your heart and soul to one particular person and when they’re gone, there isn’t room for anyone else. I suppose in time, you could make room for someone else, but it wouldn’t be the same.” She finishes.

“Didn’t you ever try?” I ask. “You could have been married without a second thought. I mean you’re beautiful, smart, funny. . .” I trail off again.

“That’s the one place you’re extremely wrong my dear.” She tells me. “Even if I had wanted to, I wouldn’t have re-married. No one would have had me. They all thought, and still do think I’m absolutely mad. I will admit, there are moments I believe it myself. Finnick was a once in a lifetime chance. I remember Katniss telling me once, that she asked Finnick if he had loved me straight away. He told her that he hadn’t. That I’d crept up on him. But funnily enough, that’s exactly how I felt about him. Fate is a strange thing Jennifer. But don’t try to defy it. Or to change it.”

I nod and smile. “He sounds as though he were the best of them. I wish I’d have gotten the chance to meet him.”

She nods as a few stray tears escape her eyes. “I wish you’d have had that chance too my dear child. I wish Liam would have as well. Look after Liam for me. I know he’ll look after you.”

I smile. “That’s one thing I can promise.”

“Do have names for the baby yet?” Annie asks.

I nod.

“What are they?!” She asks.

“If it’s a boy, Finn Liam. We were thinking Finnick but since Katniss is naming the boy Finnick, I thought Finn was the next best thing.”

Annie nods, but her eyes are glistening with tears. “And a girl?”

“We are undecided on a  first name yet. Either Maggie or Maddison. And her middle name will be Annie.”

“Annie?” She asks.

I nod.

“But what about your mother?!” Annie asks in disbelief.

“You’ve done more for me than she has.” I reply.

“But she’s been your mother for twenty four years. I’ve been your mother for all of two months.”

“And you were there when I needed support. She might have been there, but she didn’t believe me. You did. That’s why her name is Annie and not Johanna.”

Annie smiles. “You really are the daughter I never had.” She says. “Except for one thing. Your name.”

“What would you have named me?” I ask.

“Kelsey.” She replies.

“Kelsey. That’s my middle name!” I tell her.

She smiles. “Then you’re the daughter I never had.”

“Why Kelsey?” I asked.

“My sister’s name was Kelsey. She died in the games. A few years before I was entered.” Annie replies emotionlessly.

I nod. “I’m going to visit my parents quickly ok? I’ll be home soon. If Liam’s back before me, tell him I won’t be long. I don’t want him worrying!”

Annie nods.

Ok. So I know exactly what's going to happen in this story now. It may shock some people but that's what I decided.

I've also decided there WON'T be a sequel.

Instead I'm going to write a different Hunger Games fan fiction.

But that I'll explain another time.
