Chapter 36: When the Going gets Tough
Jennifer’s POV
“Johanna!” I hear from inside the house.
The door opens and there stands my mother.
“Jennifer.” She says. “Lovely to see you. Where’s Liam? Aren’t the two of you usually joined at the hip?”
I nod. “Usually. But he’s working. So I thought I’d stop by. I have some news for you.” I tell her.
She nods and invites me inside.
“So what’s the news you bring?” My mother asks.
“News of a baby.” I tell her.
“Your baby?” She asks.
I nod and she smiles slightly.
“We’ve already decided on names. Liam and I.”
“What will they be?” My father asks.
“For a boy, Finn Liam. Finn like Liam’s dad. And for a girl, either Maddison or Maggie. And her middle name will be Annie.”
My father smiles. “Beautiful names darling.”
“But surely you’re getting rid of the child?!” My mother asks.
“Why would I do that?!” I explode.
“Because a child can’t grow up with a criminal for a mother.” She tells me.
“I cannot seriously believe you said that!” I explode. “I give up. These last few weeks have been all about staying close to you. And now I’ve had enough. I’m going to District 4 with Liam and Annie. They’ve been homesick for ages but they were here for me. For you. But now, I’ve had enough.”
And with that, I storm out of the house.
Kurt’s POV
“You shouldn’t have said that.” I tell Johanna after Jennifer has left.
“Well it’s true!” She says. “A child cannot grow up with a criminal as a mother.”
“You don’t seriously believe she killed that woman do you?!” I explode. “It doesn’t make sense. She wasn’t even in District 12 when it happened. She was framed, I tell you.”
Johanna glared at me and stormed out of the room.
Jennifer’s POV
I rush home as fast as I can and when I fling the front door open and slam it behind me, Annie is the first person to try and comfort me.
Liam isn’t home yet, otherwise he’d be trying to comfort me too.
“What happened?” She asked.
“My mum . . . she . . .” I shake my head, not wanting to talk about it.
“I’m going to talk to her.” Annie announces.
“Please . . .” I whisper.
“No. It’s not fair for you.” Annie says.
