The moonlight illuminated the room as both of them slid under the covers on either side of Briana. Naomi started stroking her hair, slowly. Bennett ran his hand on her soothingly. Naomi started humming, which soon turned into a lullaby.
"Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high,
There's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true."
Bennett smiled in the dark.
"Someday I'll wish upon a star,
And wake up where the clouds are far,
Behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
Away above the chimney tops,
That's where you'll find me."
Her breathing slowed down. He could feel she fell asleep.
"She's asleep," Naomi whispered.
"Hmm. That was fast." He was disappointed that she stopped.
"Are you sleeping?" She asked
"No, I don't get sleep easily at night." He said. There was a pause.
"You are surprisingly good with kids. How did you manage to do that? She asked.
He kept staring at the ceiling above. "Because at some point, I was a child myself and all I needed was someone to hold me and save me from my nightmares. But nobody did." He said blankly.
"I am sorry for bringing it up, Bennett." She said in a guilty tone.
"It's nothing to be sorry about. You weren't the one to bully me." He said.
"You're not a bad person, Bennett. Remember that." She said. There was another pause.
"Isn't she beautiful?" asked Naomi looking down at Briana. Bennett looked at Naomi.
"She really is." He said.
"Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high,
There's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true."
Naomi started singing again as she stretched her hand and began stroking his hair.
"What are you doing?" He asked.
"First, don't ever interrupt me when I am singing. Even if it's bad. And two, you said you have trouble sleeping. So let me help you." She said
"And you think your lullaby is going to make me sleep?" She could hear the amusement in his voice.
"Shut up, Bennett or I'll make you." She said irritably.
Bennett didn't say anything after that.
"Someday I'll wish upon a star,
And wake up where the clouds are far,
Behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
Away above the chimney tops,
That's where you'll find me."
