"All I have to say is you should not have-" Amelia began to say to me while shaking her head.
"Would you quit reminding me?" I say curtly. "I understand what I did was idiotic but I had to stop him from doing something that would allow Darkness to gain a foothold."
"Idiotic indeed, but I know your right. Darkness is on the prowl. I am not fond of the attention your getting because of him though. The elders will not be happy either. You have duties to uphold and the last thing we need is for you to-"
"Amelia shut up," I said cutting her off. She was talking nonsense now and she wouldn't let it go. Even after staying under the radar all day today she wouldn't let me rest. Word had it that Prince Lucian was looking for me and was pretty relentless about it too. Part of me wanted to just end his search, but he could not know what was going on until the right moment and I would only be a mystery he would do anything to figure out. I could not put myself in that position until I was ready to tell him who and what he is.
"Fine, but what do you plan on doing when you run into him around town hmm?" Amelia said to me more than a little annoyed. "You are going to have to tell him sooner or later."
"I will take care of it. Don't worry about a thing."
"If you say so."
"Amelia, it is my choice. I am doing what I think is best for him just like you do with Adrian."
She scoffed at the mention of his name. "At least you got the good one. Adrian is a pain in the arse!"
I laughed light-heartedly. "Well Lucian is not all that easy either. What did Adrian do now?"
"Nothing out of the ordinary. He talks to me like I am his wh*re or something. He is crude and Curt with me. I have not the slightest clue as to why he would not even eat supper with me there tonight! My presence usually does not bother him that much!"
"I have told you before, you cannot make him accept you. He is who he is."
"I am aware, but I refuse to believe the tiny bit of good in him cannot be reached."
"Amelia, you cannot be serious!" I said in disbelief. "Adrian is the "Dark one" and will never be different."
She pouted and refused to look at me. "Only time will tell."
I shook my head and let it go. There is no point in trying to convince her to change her mind.
The silence between us grew heavy and I hated it. Amelia and I have been friends since we were infants. She was practically my sister and she has always been stubborn. I hated that the elders assigned her Adrian. He was dangerous, conniving, and cold-hearted. I worried about her whenever she was with him.
"Amelia, just be careful okay?" I said softly. She looked up at me from where she sat and smiled.
"Of course." Our conversation stopped there when we heard a knock at the front door of our home. I got up and opened the door to find Dale's handsome face scrunched up with worry.
"We have a problem," he said breathlessly.
"What is it Dale?"
"Adrian left his cottage and escaped the warriors."
"What!?" Amelia exclaimed from behind me and was by my side in seconds at the door.
"You heard me Amelia. James caught sight of him near the Huntress, but Lucian is also there. It won't be long now untill-"
"No!" I cut him off and pushed passed him into the night. "We must stop him. If I know Darkness, I know this cannot be good. Let's go!"
We run. There was no way Adrian is going to mess this up. Lucian is not ready to know the truth. We get there rather quickly. The man up front, a fellow warrior named Robert, recognizes us and waves us in.
We quickly disperse. Amelia dove into the crowd, Dale went around to the diners calmly looking around subtly, and I stayed at the edge of the crowd. The noise seemed to intensify and I froze. A dull pounding began at my temples alerting me that he was here.
"What's wrong?" Dale said to me suddenly.
I shook my head and looked around ignoring Dale's concerned voice. Somehow I caught Amelia's gaze in the middle of the dance floor and she mouthed "they're here." Dale and I shoved past the gyrating bodies without being the least bit considerate.
They couldn't make contact now. They simply couldn't!
I pushed through the crowd desperately to reach him. When I saw him my heart fluttered and that almost scared me as much as the sight of their hands reaching toward one another. I panicked and lunged for Lucian. I grabbed his hand just moments before they touched. I whipped him around and grabbed his face to look at me. I smiled a genuine smile so he would not suspect much. His eyes went wide in confusion and hesitated before turning around again to only see an empty spot where, Adrian, his long lost twin should've been.
