It was a dark velvety night. It was the Day of the Dead, and you could feel the stillness in the air. There was a certain eeriness to the night, the tension was almost tangible. It was much like the calm before the storm.
Not a soul roamed the streets, except those of the deceased, and all was silent because on this night families honored their departed loved ones.
However, Queen Ramilia, was finally living her dream of becoming a mother. Although this day was typically for the dead, she gave birth to twin boys. She named one boy Adrian and the other Lucian, Adrian being older by a mere minute. The night grew colder as the boys shared their first cries with the world. Ramilia was weak and only caught a glimpse of her children before she gave way to sleep.

Later that night, all was still. Not even a mouse was stirring, but Layla, the Queen's accomplice, lurked about seeking justice even if it meant betraying her niece. Slipping in and out of the shadows, Layla quickly crept to the highest point of the castle where Ramilia slept.
Months ago, before the children were conceived, Layla confronted Ramilia for playing with Darkness. Both women were born with a connection to Darkness making them barren. Thus, Ramilia's children weren't meant to be born, but yet they were.
Ramilia's connection to Darkness was very special, in fact, He called her His "tainted one". She recruited Layla to help her achieve her goals, but it required a sacrifice that Layla was not willing to make. Darkness required the sacrifice of the Pure one and even Layla knew making a deal with the Dark Spirit would mean disaster.
Layla couldn't let the prophecy happen this way; she refused to let the world turn into a living hell. She knew she would be condemned for carrying out her plan, but she did warn Ramilia of the consequences that would rest upon her shoulders if she did not heed her word. Since Ramilia did not listen, it was now time for Layla to take matters into her own hands.
She slipped past Ramilia's chambers and into the nursery across the hall. As quietly as she could, Layla picked up little Lucian, but as soon as she touched him, he began to wail. Then both Lucian and Adrian cried at the top of their tiny lungs. Suddenly she heard footsteps pounding toward the nursery. She knew that she would be caught soon if she didn't hurry.
Gathering the nearest child in her arms, she ran for the terrace. Just as Ramilia burst through the door, Layla was over the balcony, sliding down a rope to the ground. By the time Ramilia called for guards, it was already too late. Layla and Adrian were gone.
