When her words finally sunk in, shock registered on my face. She had to be lying. This all had to be a silly tale of hers.
"That's impossible. If I had a long lost twin brother, my father would be searching the ends of the earth for him. I would know about him, my brother Samuel, David, and Celeste would too. I am no fool Jessamine," I said becoming a little angry and very defensive.
"You can tell when someone lies to you. My heartbeat did not lie. You can hear it can't you?"
My jaw dropped. She knew about my ability. "How-how did you know that?"
"Answer my question, then I will answer yours. "
" Well, yes but how did you- how could you know that? "
" I've been trusted with your well-being, I know everything I need to know."
"What kind of answer is that? " Anger quickly reared it's head and I felt my pulse quicken. I was tired of her indirect answers and it was frustrating me.
"I am doing the best that I can. You will not understand it all right away. I am doing you a favor in trying to ease you into this!" She snapped at me.
"Why now though?"
"Listen, I thought it was best until I thought you were ready. It was not my job to tell you, but because your mother is not around I had to. Naturally your mother would explain all of this to you, but since the natural cycle of the Restorer and Destroyer has been tampered with, it is best I told you. When your twenty-first birthday comes around the powers of the Spirit inside you will be unleased and you won't be able to control it. You had to know now.
"What powers? Why won't I be able to control it?"
"Unfathomable gifts that you will have to discover for yourself. You won't be able to control them because you will simply be a vessel for the Great spirit."
"If what you say is true, why is no one aware of my so called twin, Adrian? Where is he now?"
"He is hidden."
I felt my temper flare up again at her simple answers. She wasn't giving me a good explanation and it was making my anger grow out of control.
"Damn it Jessamine! How am I supposed to believe you when you keep avoiding my questions and giving me bullshit answers?" I stood up and towered over her. My voice sounded deeper, but I paid it no mind. I was beyond angry.
She was not intimidated by me though. She sat very still and looked up into my eyes. "I cannot give you direct answers here for the walls have ears. I suggest you take a breath and calm down. This conversation is not over," she grasped my hand and brought it to her face. "I just want to prepare you for what is to come. I need you to trust me." Her cheek was soft under my touch and this simple gesture tamed the beast inside.
I suddenly understood her. There was way more to this than she was telling me but I could wait. I don't know why I trusted her, I just did.
"Fine, " I said quietly as I unconsciously lowered my eyes to her lips then back up to her eyes. "I'll trust you on this. I just need to know one thing."
"Ask me and I will answer as best as I can, " she said sweetly. I caressed her cheek and smiled.
"Will I ever-"
Suddenly my bedroom door burst open and David stormed in. He caught sight of Jessamine and I detected a very faint glare. "I'm sorry to interrupt, but your father needs to see you now," he said without even looking at me. "Your guest has to leave now." His voice hardened as he directed his words to her.
"David, mind your manners. I will be there in a moment, my father can wait," I said nonchalantly and very light-heartedly.
"I will mind them when I deem correct and I said now Lucian. It is very important," his tone iced over and it startled me. David was an even-tempered man and I have never seen nor heard him sound this crude.
My face flushed with irritation at his lack of respect but Jessamine's gentle hand on my arm kept me at bay. "Give me one moment and I will go, but some privacy please?"
He grunted and put up two fingers meaning I had no more than two minutes. I bowed my head in acknowledgement which made him leave us alone.
"I am so sorry, he normally does not act this way, especially toward women," I immediately turned to face Jessamine again.
"I know, it's alright. I took no offense. Just go, I will be behind you every step of the way. Just look to the shadows and I will be there. "
"No, you are not well enough to get up. I know it is your duty or whatever, but you need to rest too. I have David at my back, I will be fine my sweet Guardian," I said as I brushed the stray hairs away from her face.
She smiled sadly and nodded, "David is a good man. Go with him; I will stay here. I will rest as you request, but if you ever need me, all you have to do is think of me and call me by name. I will be there in a heartbeat."
"Thank you, I will be fine though. Goodbye Jessamine," I kissed her forehead and left her.
I was surprised at my sudden acceptance of her radical story. It still seemed ludicrous to me, but something deep inside of me knew I could trust her. For most of my life I knew I was different. I could see and hear things others couldn't, I could do things that even mages deemed impossible, and I always felt this strange empty feeling that nothing could fill. I am not sure why I was so impatient or why I got so angry as she spoke to me, but all along I knew she was not lying. I heard the steady beat of her heart, she could not lie to me. I would trust her until she gave me a reason not to.
I did not have much time to analyze what Jessamine told me because as soon as I caught up with David he began telling me what was going on.
"Rafael and the other generals are gathered with your father down in the bunker. Your father wants me to inform you that we have captured a Rolonian soldier. We have been questioning him for hours but he has not spoken, " he let out an exasperated sigh.
"When did this happen?" I asked genuinely curious.
"He was captured this morning around dawn. He was found disguised in one of our general's homes. He was taking advantage of her for information," my eyebrows shot up at this but I kept my mouth shut. "They have crossed the line for the final time Luke. How dare they do this to one of ours? He tortured her for the information he needed, raped her, and killed her. King Daniel will no longer stand by and deny his men's intrusion. We will declare war in seven days time unless our conditions have been met. Your father wants you to meet with King Daniel. We are not sure when, but this must end." He paused waiting for my response, but I did not have one.
I was not at all surprised. I knew this day would come sooner or later. It was way sooner than I'd hope, but again I expected it.
"If this is all my father wanted me to know then what am I needed for?"
"We need you to get the information out of him, " he said casually.
" If other men have tried, then how can I do it? Why me?" I asked the question already knowing the answer. It saddened me to think that the man I loved and trusted was going to make me use my gifts against another man. I could see my father doing so but David wanted me to do it just as much as my father.
"We want you to torture the information out of him by whatever means. Get inside his head if you have to."
Authors note
This chapter has not been edited much (just like my others) but oh well. I hope you enjoyed this chapter and Luke's mood swings.
