"What's going on?" I shouted as a flock of doctors and nurses raced in and surrounded Kevin. "Somebody tell me!"

"I'm going to need you two to leave for a moment." A young nurse said as she practically pushed Bryan and I out into the hall.

"The fuck." Manny was racing to meet us. "What's going on?"

"I don't know." My voice shook.

Doctors and nurses shuffled in and out without muttering a word to us. Evan kept attempting to enter but was rejected each time.

I slouched against the wall and slid into a sitting position. My voice shook as I held back tears. "Please." I begged to an exiting nurse. "Tell me please, what's going on."

She was silent and looked at me with a sense of guilt. "His-" she paused. "His heart gave out."

"Kevin!" I jumped to my feet and forced my way past the doctors to the side of his bed. "Kevin!" I screamed in tears.

"We need you to leave." Two doctors attempted to lift me but I gripped tight to the bed.

"Kevin!" I looked down at him, his body motionless, gauze around his chest, a levitated foot, an ice pack around his head. "Don't you dare fucking die on me." I looked up at the monitor, the line was flat. "Kevin please."

"We're sorry." One doctor spoke as he let me go. "Official time of death 1:15"

I tried to shout but I couldn't. I flung myself over Kevin's chest and sobbed grossly. My hand gripped his and I intertwined our fingers. I rested my head on his chest and listened for any sign of life. Buhm buhm. I leaned back and watched as his eyes flung open. He gasped through his barred jaw and pointed to his lungs.

"Get an oxygen mask!" A nurse ordered and within seconds it was over Kevin's mouth and nose.

I sat up with tears still in my eyes. The medical personel trickled out slowly, leaving me and one doctor in the room. Manny Evan and Bryan patiently waited outside and talked with one of the nurses.

Kevin motioned to the white board and I grabbed it for him. He held the button on the side of the bed that tilted it into a sitting position and then struggled to write.

What happened?

The tears were still prominent and my voice was still full of shock. "You-" I shook my head.

What happened?

Tell me!

I sighed deeply. "You-" I swallowed hard. "You died."

He was motionless for a moment before erasing the board and writing one solitary word.

Oh

"But you aren't." I smiled, trying to comfort him. "You're here and I can't be more greatl."

The oxygen mask they had placed on him barely covered his swollen jaw and I imagine it had to be uncomfortable. Kevin stared at the wall, the doctors had left on the TV and an add for birth control was projected on it.

The rest slowly joined the room in silence. Deaths silence. No, death isn't silent, death is loud, death is painful, this, this was life, and we were all still alive.
