The clock above the vending machine said it was nearly seven. This was the longest day of my life, literally. I poked at my food and managed to swallow a bite or two. In less than 24 hours I had watch my best friend go from King, to broken, to dead, and now to hysterical. The way he had said those three words were not coming from any logical part of him. He had said it before, yes, but not like that. It must be the morphine. It had to be his morphine.
"Alix?"
I looked up to see Alister standing in the hall outside of the cafeteria.
"I know it's late but I thought I'd drop by and see Kevin." He walked up and pulled another chair up to the table.
"Sami at home then?" I asked and poked at my food again.
"Yes, she sends her best. How's he doing?"
"Well-" I entered an internal struggle on weather or not to tell him every last detail. "Broken jaw, fractured ankle, and a few cracked ribs." I decided to leave out the dying part.
"Where the rest?" He asked as his eyes scanned the room.
"Out?" To be honest I didn't think to ask where they were going, and my phone had been left on the tour bus from before the show. The show, it seemed like forever ago, but in reality it occurred less than 24 hours ago.
"Ah."
We were both at a loss of words, my stomach was still not able to handle food properly so I tossed it, majority uneaten, into the bin. "He's in 217."
I lead Alister out to the elevators and pretended to listen as he rambled on. It's not that I didn't want to focus, it was simply that I couldn't. But as he spoke I nodded and agreed. It seemed to pass off as listening.
Kevin was asleep when we returned. Alister placed a hand drawn card on the table, along with the others. He picked up the whiteboard and stared blankly at the heart.
"Cute nurse." I told him. I wouldn't tell him that Kevin had believed he was falling in love with me. It's just not logical enough, morphine, it's the morphine for sure.
"Must be I've never seen him draw such a decent heart." He laughed and wiped the words with his sleeve. In their place he scribbled his own message.
Kevin,
Stopped in but you were sleeping. Get rest and I will check on again tomorrow. Sami sends her love
Alister
He replaced the cap with a screech and gave me a tainted smile. "He doesn't look too good."
"I know." I was getting tired of people saying that. Yes he looked like a giant potato at the moment, all swollen in various occasions, but he was still Kevin. Yes his hair was messy, yes he was hooked to wires, and yes he was bedridden and hurt, but, he's still- "beautiful."
"Pardon?" Alister asked with a puzzling grin.
"Your hand writing." I thought of the lie in a split second.
"Oh, thank you."
Kevin's eyelids would occasionally flutter, a sign of dreaming. His chest rose and fell with slight struggle but not enough to cause fear. He was beautiful, well, for a friend that is. I shook off the thought and pretended to listen to Alister once more. He stuck around for twenty minutesbefore heading out to the hotel he had rented for the night. I took a seat in the reclining chair and focused on Adventure Time until I could barely keep my eyes open anymore. Kevin's hand was draped off the bed and within distance of mine. I was tempted to reach out to it, but resisted and simply let mine drape off the arm of the chair.
