Manny plopped down on the couch and pulled out his phone. "'We know you can make it Kevin! We are all waiting for you. Stay rested and get well soon' 'we love you and are here for you' 'we miss you Kevin stay well!'" Manny read tweets, trying to break the eerie tension that had built up.
Kevin gestured a slight thumbs up. He was barely enthused.
"Need anything?" I asked.
He pointed between his legs.
"Need to piss?"
He shook his head and wrote.
Itches.
"Uh." I slowly took a step closer. "You sure?"
He nodded but as I began to remove the sheet he smacked my head.
FOOT!
He wrote almost angerly.
"Oh good!" I sighed and Bryan, Manny and Evan burst into a chorous of laughter. I reached down to his bandaged foot and scratched it.
"Quick video update." Bryan was behind me with a camera in hand. "Kevin is awake and seems to be doing just fine. Say hi Kevin!"
From the bed Kevin gave a slight wave and scribbled on the board.
I love you all!
"Let's wish him a speedy recovery!" he walked into the hall to continue his video.
Manny was still enticed in his phone and Evan sat anxiously staring beyond the wall.
"You two fine?" I asked.
"Tired." Evan shook himself into focus.
"Get sleep?"
"You need it more than us." Manny stood up, Evan followed. "I need to get out of this hospital. We'll be back in a bit."
"We'll take Bryan." Evan added before they snuck out.
"Just us." I sighed and looked up at the tv. Adventure Time, this I could handle.
Mmhmm. He mumbled.
"Feeling anything?"
He shook his hand side to side.
"Numb?"
He nodded.
"When you fell-" I began, unaware if I should finish. But he gave me a questionable brow and I had to. "I knew you were going to."
His face became even more puzzled.
"I saw you jumping closer to the cord and I kept thinking 'man he's gonna slip." I sighed. "I'm sorry."
For?
"Not doing anything."
He shrugged.
"You know, you are a bad omen." I smiled jokingly.
And you're my good omen.
"What's that supposed to mean?" I laughed.
We complete each other.
"True." I felt my face flush hot as I sat in the reclining chair beside him. "Ya know sometimes I-"
He was pointing between his legs again.
"Itch?" I asked.
He shook his head and scribbled without erasing. Piss.
Great. I helped Kevin into a full sitting position and he flung his good leg off the bed, I helped move the other. I had assumed he was naked under the sheet but he wore a pair of black boxers. He wrapped his arm around me, I grabbed the rack with his IVs and helped him hobble into the adjacent bathroom. He stood beside the toilet and gave me a needy stare. He was wobbly and still needed support. I allowed him to lean on me and struggled to keep my eyes on the wall and not below.
When all was said and done I helped him back into the bed where he sat with his legs still off. I had replaced the rack and we sat staring at each other. He have a happy sigh and a sound that resembled laughter.
"What's so funny?" I asked.
He grabbed the whiteboard and wrote while still lightly chuckling. So is it big enough?
"Oh god dude." I laughed. "I didn't see it!"
He erased with the side of his arm. Want to?
"Hell no." I laughed.
It's too big for you anyway :p
I couldn't contain myself and burst into a fit full of laughter. "What would I do without you?"
Help other men piss
"Cut it with the pissing!" My eyes were watering from my laughter.
Sometimes I love you
I felt my face flush red. "Yeah well I love you too man." I wrapped my arm around his shoulder tightly. "I need food. Do you mind?"
Hurry back! He scribbled a lopsided heart beside it.
"I promise." I slipped into the hall and allowed my face to flush fully red.
