The alarm blared on Hana's clock radio. It was 6:30, and that meant it was time for her to get up. She got up, pressed the button to turn the alarm off, and stretched to start her morning.
"Ah, another day." She yawned. She hopped out of bed, threw open the door to the rest of her apartment, beginning her morning routine. A cup of coffee, some breakfast, a couple videos on YouTube, and finally, a shower. However, when she entered her bathroom, she saw something she wasn't expecting. She yawned once more and flicked on the light switch. Her tired eyes drifted up towards the mirror, and a startled yelp escaped her lips as she saw what was there to greet her. Someone had written on the mirror. In what appeared to be red paint were words in the same ancient text as the words on the coffin.
"What the hell?!" Hana yelled. "Did someone break in again?"
Break-ins were common in the part of New York Hana lived in. But nothing seemed stolen or out of place besides the writing on the mirror, and she knew nobody in New York knew how to write in this language.
"What does this even say?" She muttered. She stared intently at it, narrowing her eyes as she read the text.
"The true king has returned... you will complete his metamorphosis..."
She didn't quite know what it meant, but it sounded creepy. "Who the hell wrote this?" Then it hit her; she learned the ancient language through various books she found. She also had a habit of leaving books open when she wasn't reading them. Someone probably broke in and used the book to translate a creepy message to write on her mirror.
"Whatever. I guess I'll call the police about it." She shrugged. This wasn't the first time something like this had happened in her apartment. One time a burglar in a red spandex suit with swords on his back broke in and stole nothing but a box of frozen burritos. Nothing surprised her anymore.
"Maybe I should just move to Skull Island permanently..." She thought. She quickly scoffed and shook the thought from her mind. There was no way she could move to Skull Island, she thought. Her life was in New York, and moving to Skull Island would mean leaving everything she had ever known behind. She eyed the writing on her mirror again. It made them extremely uncomfortable. She couldn't stay in the bathroom much longer.
"I guess I can skip the shower for today." She said. She called the police about the break in, and they said it would take at least an hour for them to get to her home. Realizing this meant she couldn't leave the apartment until they arrived, she decided she would call the museum to explain she wouldn't be coming in. The phone rang, but there was no answer.
"Weird..." Hana said. "Everyone should be at work by now... Maybe nobody heard the phone ring. I'll just call Akane."
She dialled the phone number, and Akane answered soon after.
"Hey, Hana, what's up?" She said.
"I'm gonna be held up for a bit so I won't be into work for a while." Hana explained.
"...Um... didn't you get the boss' email?" Akane asked. "Nobody was called in today."
"What? Why not?" Hana asked.
"Because of the murder. You didn't know?" Akane continued. "The cleaning crew found a body in the Skull Island exhibit. Apparently they have no idea who it was because of how mangled up the body was."
Hana gasped and covered her mouth with her hand. "Oh my god... that's terrible!"
"I know. Hopefully they catch whoever did it." Akane agreed.
Hana hung up the phone and slumped over in her couch. Breaking and entering was one thing, but learning that a murderer could have been in the same building as her sent shivers up her spine. Luckily, the police would arrive soon. She walked over to the window and opened it, trying to get some fresh air into her room. If she looked up, she would have seen a black corpse-like creature crawling across the wall.
