65| Staying under the radar

Two shots.

The two shots clashed and cracked though the air. The silence that followed was a knowing silence. Each time Amber's feet hit the ground, her legs shook and wobbled ready to give way. The pounding in her head resonated her thoughts as everything around became an inaudible whisper. The winds tussled the trees, the quite swish mockingly peaceful.

She dropped to her knees, the gravel painfully biting at her knees. Arms circled around her, holding her the ground as her chest heaved, her mouth wide open and nostrils flared, trying to fish for her breath.

"I told you to stay in the f'cking tree." Gabe cried as he held her in the ground.

"I told you..." Amber panted. "You need me..." She was ready to collapse. Her head spinning, mouth barren, lungs burning, her heart swollen pushing hard against her chest.

"You ran all this way?" Gabe still not quite believing that she was here.

All Amber could do was nod her head.

"But how did you know I was here?"

"I don't know. We're Bonnie and Clyde remember. I wasn't going to let you do this by yourself."

Gabe sat in the ground, pulling Amber onto his lap.

"Plus. You would have been late anyways." Amber closed her eyes trying to steady her breathing. She couldn't just wait up on Gabe to come rescue her. F'ck no! And it proved to be a good decision. She had seen Gabe wrestling on the ground with a guy twice his size, when the shot was clear, she took it. When Gabe had ducked to the ground, she shut the other that came out the car Even though she was a few yards away, she didn't miss. She couldn't afford to miss. When she saw Gabe running towards her, she didn't fail to miss the ground.

Gabe looked at her in his arms and started laughing both with sad and happy tears. He hadn't even realised how hard his heart was beating until Amber laid on his chest. He took of his bag careful not to knock her off him. Unzipping the bag, he pulled out a water bottle unscrewing the cap and bringing it to Amber's lips. She gulped it down, every last drop.

"Gabe." Amber said. "I can't feel my legs."

It was just them on the side of the road. Stupidly sitting on the ground laughing out of relief.

Gabe took her face in his hands, and she cranes her neck round.

"Amber, you're so stubborn, you have a weird obsession with fudge and your f'cking crazy."

Amber looked at him lost, her thought process lagging.

"I'm not crazy." Amber chuckled.

"You're my crazy." He stared at her parted lips them back at her quizzed eyes. "I love you." For a second he could swear that thing in his chest, if it could, quit. Fed up with all the stress he had put through. She didn't say anything, just searched his eyes, so he continued. Then all the feelings he felt towards her just rushed out. "I want to wake up next you every morning and cook you breakfast and argue over TV shows and who's turn it is to do the dishes and make you feel so special because you are and I want to have my babies with you and grow old and tell you every morning how beautiful you are..."

"You mean that, Gabriel?" She said in an almost whisper. Her heart raced like she hadn't stopped running.

"Every word. Every inch of you I love."

Amber had heard enough, she turned fully kissing his lips sweetly, in awe with all of his words.

"I love you." She admitted pulling away and for the first time, saying it felt different, her world didn't come crashing down and he hadn't run away. Nothing changed but the grin in his face. "I mean," she used he thumb to brush away a tear drop o his cheek. "How could I not?"

His laughter filled her ears like melted chocolate.

"But you forgot one thing," Amber said seriously. "I didn't hear you mention anything about fudge."

Gabe grinned hugging her. "You can have all fudge you want." and Amber hugged him back smiling into his shoulder.

"We should get up." Amber murmured into his neck.

"Go on then."

"I can't." Amber laughed. "My legs are jelly."

Gabe shifted her on the ground again, stood up and stretched, then bending down to scoop her up.

"Up, up and away!" Amber stretched her arms out giggling as Gabe carried her laughing.

He set her down in the passenger seat, running around the car to jump in the driver seat and shoving their bags in the back. Amber put her seatbelt on watching as Gabe started the ignition.

"Call DH and tell her what happened." Gabe said as he pulled away from the curve, wheels skidding as he sped off.

"Good afternoon," Amber heard DH say through the phone after picking up on the first ring. She furrowed her eyebrows then put the phone if louder speaker.

"Hello?" Amber asked, DH sounding weird.

"Hi. I'm afraid I won't be able to make it this evening. I had to run out of town for a bit, the pipe in my sink wasn't secure. You'll have to try again sometime, but you can't stop here. Sorry for the inconvenience and have a safe journey." The phone chipped.

Amber looked at Gabe and he took his eyes off the road to look at her briefly.

"S.I.G.M.A, the agency, have a mole?" Amber clarified.

"Looks like it. There's a leak somewhere in the organisation and someone's selling us out." Gabe kept driving.

"Do you think that's how they knew where we were? At the hospital, at the cabin..."

"Unfortunately, yes."

Amber looked out the window.

"What are we going to do? We've got people looking for me, our identities aren't safe and we can't go to the organisation."

Gabe stopped the car, taking the phone from Amber and throwing it out the window. He took the SatNav out of the car, the fetched his phone from his bag. Hacked into the GPS, corrupting it, in case they tried tracking them.

He reached over to Amber, pecking her lips.

"I don't know baby," he said then pressed the gas, causing the car to rock as he hit the pedal cursing onto the motorway. "Except for the fact that for now, we're staying under the radar."
