(Luke POV)
As we strummed the final note of She Looks So Perfect, I grinned over at the brunette girl sat on the sofa at the other end of the basement. I knew Mum had approved the set list, and I loved her, but Mikki’s opinion meant everything to me.
Her pink lips parted, like she was going to say something, but instead a sob escaped her lips and for once, I was the first one by her side. “Hey,” I said, taking one of her small hands and completely dwarfing it with one of mine. “Don’t cry, Mik. You know it kills me to see girls crying. Even you.”
She smiled sadly, not even bothering to snap at me for calling her Mik. “Sorry. I – I’m just so proud of you lot. And it kills me how I’m not gonna be with you when you’re on the biggest tour of your career so far.” I put an arm around her shoulder and pulled her so she lay against my chest, feeling her tense up at first, but eventually relaxing.
“Since we’re not gonna be in Australia for your birthday,” I said, cursing inwardly as she looked up at me through her long eyelashes, praying that she couldn’t feel the way my heart was pounding against my chest. “We thought we’d give you your birthday presents early. That okay?”
She nodded and sat up straight, using the back of her hand to wipe away the tears from her eyes, and I gestured for the boys to bring over the cake and box of a few early presents we’d gotten her, hidden behind Ashton’s drum kit. Another sob left her lips as Callum and Michael lifted it in the air, and by the time the other three were sat around us, I kind of felt like crying too.
“HAPPY EARLY BIRTHDAY MIKKI!” Calum, Ashton and Mikey chimed in unison, handing her the box. She giggled and leaned down to hug the three of them, even giving me a quick hug, before she removed the lid.
“Who got me these?” she laughed, holding up a red bra and thong combination from Victoria’s Secret and holding them up against her body playfully. “Me!” Michael said, raising his arms above his head and cheering loudly. “Hope you have some wonderful times in that underwear, Mikki. Maybe out of it too.”
I took a shaky breath as Michael winked at me, knowing that I’d be imagining her in the lacy lingerie. So he’d gone against our usual traditions and had bought her lingerie instead of a video game, just to wind me up. Fucking Clifford.
“I’ve wanted to read these for ages!” she said, pulling three books out of the box and smiling at me as she saw a post-it note with my name scribbled on it stuck to them. I smiled back at her, trying my hardest not to blush. It was my worst habit, blushing. I could never control it, especially around her. I’d overheard her talking to Ashton’s sister about them: Divergent, The Fault in Our Stars and The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and even though I was planning on getting her much better presents, I hadn’t wanted to make it too obvious that I liked her. She leaned over and planted a kiss on my cheek and it took all of my willpower not to touch the spot her lips had just touched, which was tingling. “Thanks Luke.”
“Aw!” she squealed as she pulled out Calum’s present. She’d dragged us all along to see Frozen, and he’d gone and bought her the DVD. “Can we watch this later? Thank you, Cal!” “Course we can, Mikki.” “My present next!” Ashton said, grinning at his best friend and clapping his hands together. I felt my own lips curl into a grin, knowing what was inside Ashton’s present.
