(Luke POV)

“So, tell us about your relationship with this young lady,” the lady said, smiling over at the four of us from the sofa opposite.

We were currently on a breakfast TV show, and whilst this wasn’t our first, it was our first in a while. I didn’t mind filmed interviews, though I preferred radio ones where I couldn’t be seen, but my issue with this one in particular was that it was live. And the fact that once we said something, that comment was heard by thousands of people worldwide, and there was no editing out or cutting.

My eyes widened as a picture of us with Mikki came on the screen; newspapers had photographed all of us together, we’d been asked about her in formal interviews, but only in passing, and we’d always given the simple answer that she was an old school friend and left it at that. The fact that they’d gone to the effort of having a photo put onto the screen meant that they were properly going to ask about her.

“Our sources say she’s photographed with you guys a lot, comes on tour with you, and that you’re rarely seen without her. Apparently she has a YouTube channel that she started recently, documenting you guys on tour and giving your young, teenage fans advice. I couldn’t help but notice when you showed up earlier that today is one of those rare occasions you’ve been seen without her, so who is she?”

The photo on the screen was from the week she’d gotten her tongue pierced; she was stood in between me and Ashton, with Calum and Michael slightly behind us. Ashton had with his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close to his side, and I was looking over at her, clearly thinking no one had been looking.

Fuck.

The lads and I exchanged a glance, and I knew they wanted to be wary of what to say. Even though she’d been nothing but lovely to them, there were always a few fans who sent hate to Mikki, and the last thing we wanted to do was make that worse. “That’s Mikki, she’s back at the hotel because she’s really bad at waking up early in the morning,” Calum said, chuckling as he shook his head. “Most of our fans know who she is because she’s one of our best friends, and helps quite a few of them meet us.”

“She started her YouTube channel recently just to like, let the fans see what we do on a daily basis, because she knows they love our Keeks and Instagram videos,” I said, trying my hardest not to blush as I praised her. “But since she’s been gaining subscribers, mainly teenage girls, she’s decided to do another weekly video where she just gives them advice, or answers any questions they have. She’s planning on starting that tomorrow, actually.”

“She kind of introduced us all properly, so I guess you could say she’s the reason 5 Seconds of Summer is a four-member group,” Michael said, running a hand through his hair and smiling. “We’ve never done a concert or gig without her there, we always say she’s our good luck charm.”

“All of you seem really fond of her, you’re best friends with her? How did that happen?”

“Ash has known her since she was born,” Calum continued, nodding over at Ashton, who nodded at our interviewer. “Their mums are best friends.” “And she went to school with me, Cal and Lukey here,” Michael added, pointing at Calum and I in turn. “She’s actually been to the same schools as Luke since kindergarten, and they live across the road from one another back home.”

“Until recently, they didn’t get along though. They’re friends now, but before they couldn’t stand each other,” Ashton said, shrugging his shoulders and laughing as he looked at me, obviously not registering why saying this on national television was a bad idea. I tried hard to hide the look of panic on my face; though our fans knew that, I knew quite a few newer fans would be watching this interview, and I didn’t want them to have a bad view of Mikki just because up until recently, I’d kept up the pretence of disliking her.
