(Luke POV)
“Here we are, seats 25 A-E,” Ashton said as we arrived at our seats, gesturing over-exaggeratedly and almost knocking Mikki over in the process. “Oops, sorry.”
“Idiot,” she chuckled, grabbing onto one of the chairs to steady herself. We’d all chipped in upgrade Mum’s tickets to ones in first class, in order to show our gratitude for her constant support over the past few years, which meant that we’d be sat in a two and a three for the flights. “I cannot believe I have to sit with you for the next fourteen and a half hours.”
“And eight hours on the second flight. And probably the hour and a half we have to wait for the flight.”
“What an amazing way to spend my birthday,” she said, forcing sarcasm into her voice and reaching up to kiss him on the cheek as she saw the mock-hurt look on his face. I tried to ignore the wave of jealousy washing over me, mentally reminding myself that they were best friends and it was something she did out of habit, it didn’t necessarily mean she liked him. I could see Michael and Calum watching me, so I forced myself to look away, looking down at my shoes.
“So, how are we gonna be sat? Me and Mikki over by the window and you guys in C-E?”
“Y’know, I kinda wanna sit by the window, watch us taking off. Is it cool if me and Cal sit in these two and you three sit in the middle aisle?”
My head snapped back up as I heard Mikey’s suggestion, my heart pounding in my chest at the thought of being sat near Mikki for the next twenty-four hours. He didn’t care whether or not he could look out of the window whilst we took off, this was just an excuse for me to be put in an extremely awkward position for a long time. Ashton shrugged his shoulders, sitting in the aisle seat nearest to Calum and Mikey, leaving Mikki to sit in the middle seat.
Oh great.

“Flight attendants, please take your seats for take-off.”
“I love long flights so much,” Mikki giggled to Ashton, clapping her hands together gleefully. While the first time I’d been out of Australia had been when we’d first gone to the UK for the Take Me Home tour, Mikki had been travelling since she was a kid, spending her summers abroad with her parents, Ashton, his siblings and his mum. “Look at all the movies they have to watch! I don’t even know if I want to sleep.”
As the plane began rolling forwards, skimming along the runway, I felt my stomach doing somersaults, my head beginning to spin. I’d always been afraid of flying; it wasn’t that I was afraid of heights normally, I loved rollercoasters and looking at a city skyline, but being up in the air for a long period of time in an airplane made me feel helpless. I let out an involuntary whimper, feeling my stomach lurch as the plane flew up and I grabbed onto my hand rest instinctively, trying not to throw up.
“Luke, are you okay?”
I felt my cheeks burning as I heard the familiar voice of the brunette next to me, and looked up to see her emerald eyes wide with concern. Behind her, I could see the other boys looking equally worried. “I – I’m sorry. I just – I don’t really like – I’m still not used –” “To flying,” she said softly, finishing my sentence for me. She reached out and grabbed my large hand with one of her own smaller ones, squeezing it gently. “Don’t worry. I’m here, we’re all here. Just squeeze my hand.”
