~Marco's POV~
I sat with Jean and Connie, watching my two friends play videogames as I scrolled through my phone. I was working to distract myself from thinking about Y/N. I knew she was at her ex-boyfriend's trial, which had both Hanji and I worried. We were concerned about her health and about what such an intense case could do to her. She had been so overwhelmed over everything that she was struggling to eat properly and get the appropriate amount of rest. Hanji and I both knew it was taking a toll on her, but we just trusted she wouldn't bite off more than she could chew. After all, she promised.
I breathed in a haggard breath and tossed my phone aside, training my focus to the TV screen. I watched as the brightly colored screen flashed the brilliant gleams of their game. The sound of gunfire chimed from the speakers, merely acting as background noise to me. It was hopeless. I had a bad feeling knotting in my stomach.
"Why are you moping around so much?" Jean abruptly questioned, pulling me from my thoughts.
"Huh? What?" I perked up.
"You're acting like a depressed teenage girl," Connie added, not turning his attention to me. "It's so dismal, to be honest."
"Yeah," Jean agreed. "Why don't you call your girlfriend?"
I could feel my cheeks flush red at those words. Ugh. Y/N is not my girlfriend. Why do they think that? It had been comical at first, but it was just growing more and more aggravating. It was difficult to tell whether they were taunting me or if they really believed she and I were an item. Either way, it was not true and only irritated me.
"She's not my girlfriend," I sighed. "I can't figure out why you guys still believe that."
"Dude, really?" Jean chuckled. "You and Y/N are as tight as they come. The fact you deny being with her just makes us all that more convinced you are together."
"How?" I questioned. "How are you two so convinced of that?"
Connie shrugged, "You always get so flustered about this topic, which typically speaks for itself."
I rolled my eyes. "For crying out loud, Y/N and I are not -"
I was about to clarify mine and Y/N's true relationship for what felt like the millionth time when my cell began to ring. I hurried to it, thinking it was Y/N calling me with good news when I glanced at the caller ID. Huh? I knitted my brows in confusion, holding my phone close to me. Why is she calling me?
"Might wanna answer that," Jean snickered.
Connie added, "Yeah. Your girlfriend is calling."
I rolled my eyes at them while slid the icon to 'answer' and held the phone to my ear, making sure the volume was low enough that the others wouldn't hear.
"Hel-" I began before I was interrupted.
"Freckles!" Hanji exclaimed.
I flinched at Hanji's shrill yell and growled, "I told you to stop calling me that!" I eased back and continued, "What do you want, anyway?"
I waited, listening to my friends snickering at me, the two of them oblivious as to who I was talking with. In their world I was chatting with Y/N, but that couldn't have been any further from the truth. No, but what I heard made me wish it was Y/N. Connie and Jean's taunts sounded so much better than what came next.
"Marco," Hanji huffed, her tone hurried. "Oh God. Marco. Marco, we need to go to the hospital, now. Like, now, now."
"Wait, wait, wait," I said calmly. I climbed to my feet and shuffled out of the room. Once I was at a safe distance I added, "What are you talking about? Go to the hospital? Why?"
