The future was a scary thing for both of them to think about.
The girl thought about what her parents are going to do, but she was also scared that she was going to fail in the film industry. She was scared of the future.
The boy thought about how he would have to eventually go back to his life. He was scared he would become so burned out he would lose traction and stability in his life. He was scared of the future.
The future was also very exciting to them.
The girl was excited to start her life. She was excited to write her screenplay and direct her movie. She was excited to experience life in a new way. She was excited to have a new friend to experience this life with, she was excited for the future.
The boy was excited about having a new...friend... To share his future with. He was excited to watch her write her screenplay and he was excited to watch her be successful. He was excited for the future.
"What's your screenplay about?"
"Well, I want to write about a girl who allows books to help her make decisions. Like her friend will ask her if she wants to hang out and she is in the middle of a book so to help her decide she cracks open a book and whatever it says sways her decision. I have all the major plot lines picked out but no spoilers, no matter how good of a friend you are." She smiled at him widely. "What about you, what's next for you, any big shoots or anything?"
"Uhhh, I'm not sure. I'm more of a roll with the flow kinda guy I don't really know what's next. In the future though I'm not sure if I want to stick with photography. Don't quote me on that though."
"Okay Finny, sure." The girl realized she gave him a nickname, "oh shit, sorry. If you don't like being called that let me know."
"No, I like it... A lot." The girl blushed along with the boy. Then she abruptly said.
"Promise that in five years we will get back on this train and talk about what's happened in our past five years. Or maybe even get on this train and talk about our next hopes for the future?"
"I'm cool with that promise."
And thus the promise was set in stone.
The girl changed the promise because she wanted to keep in touch with the boy.
The boy accepted the promise because the more time he could spend with the girl the better.
