"Edgar I can't I'm sorry." I speak softy.
I intertwine Alec and I's hands together. "I'm going to America with Alec." I say with a sudden boost of confidence.
We run down the street hands tangled together, heading straight for the airport. We were both laughing to death as we ran.

True happiness, you don't see that often.

We get to the airport early. After we finally stop our laughing fits I realize our hands are still tangled together. We both blush fiercely at the same time and pull away awkwardly.
We put our suitcases on the conveyer. Then we hop on the plane without saying a word. It's just so awkward.. about fifteen minutes into the flight I decide to say something.
"Sorry about him, he's the dude I've been staying with I told you about." I mumbled.
"I figured." He replies with a half smile, looking into my eyes.

Butterflies flutter in my stomach.

........................................
"Isn't your fifteenth birthday coming up on October 15th?" He says, smiling into me. Warming my cold soul.
"Yeah, your lucky you are turning sixteen in November." "You can drive." I winked and said.
Alec nodded and laughed. For the rest of the flight we took a long nap to get our sleep in, since we were not going to get much in the next few days.
.............................................
The plane ride is finally over. Thank god.
We stepped of the plane and gathered our luggage. I had no idea where we were going from here. But Alec sure did. I was just so excited a new life.
....................................
We pull up, and I am astonished.

A beautiful little white home. That's why he has been saving up....
"It's marvelous Alec!" I exclaim. We both smile as step in. It's so cozy and perfect.
We split separate ways as we go to find our bedrooms.
Mine is perfect. After unpacking a few things it looks so cozy.

So I always feel safe and protected... even in these times.
....................................
The Japanese have finally surrendered, and the war is officially finally over. But I feel like another one could pop up at any time...
...................................................
It is very late when Alec and I finish unpacking everything, it is almost 6 a.m.
I am very glad we had those long naps on the plane.
We finally get to sleep but my mind wanders to a different time..when my mother was killed in front of my very own eyes. I wake up crying around ten, after only four hours of sleep. Good enough.. not like I can sleep again now..
....................................
I get up and change into the same dress I wore when I first met Alec. I go to the market only about a three minute walk from where we live, and six in total. I buy some food and other supplies we will need. I am almost out of my saved up money I realize, I better find a new job soon. I get back and cook some eggs.. Alec's favorite.
Right on key he comes out with a huge smile on his face, "eggs!" He gushes and laughs.

....................

It is almost two when the house is exactly how we want it. We both set off to find some work.

I decide to walk down to the printing press, where they write and print our town's newspaper.

I open the door to find a tall, muscular man, in about his late thirties standing behind the desk.

"Hello my name is Rebecca Alder, I am here about the writing job?" I speak clearly and confidently.

He looks up and stops to look me up and down, all five foot five of me. I feel quite uncomfortable....

"Experience?" He questions, looking down at his paper again.

I have lived all over Europe throughout the war, and lived through the Hiroshima bombing." "I have wrote in a diary throughout that, and have wrote many stories." I say as confident as ever.

I hand him a paper I wrote and he looks quite impressed.

"I will be fifteen next month, but even though I am young I am wise beyond my years." I say smiling.

"Your hired, I like your attitude." "Call me Mr. Jones."  He pauses for a second. "Our reporter will bring you stories to write." He speaks with his rumbling voice.

I nod and thank him. He shows me into my office.

It is wonderful, it is just about the size of my bedroom, not to big, not to small. I have a typewriter on my desk and regular office things. I signed a paper that said I would be making a whopping fifty cents an hour! Ten cents more than minimum wadge. I couldn't be happier.

I set up everything and worked on my first report, I hoped in the next couple years I would get promoted and get a even bigger wadge.

.......................................................

I got home to find that Alec wasn't back yet. It was only five p.m so I wasn't worried. I decided I would cook a meatloaf, and a cherry pie for dessert. I would make four dollars and fifty cents a day, and would make twenty-two dollars and fifty cents a week!

Alec got home around seven with a dollar in his hand. I looked at him puzzled.

"I got a job at the mechanic place downtown, I got a tip today." I laugh and share my good news with him. Together we would make forty-five dollars a week. Which would pay the bills and buy enough food, it would also let us buy a few nice thing every once in awhile.

October 15th 1945

I have been blindfolded for nearly a half hour, we have been driving to somewhere for a few hours, Alec takes off my blindfold and we are outside of New York City! On a banner hanging above a overpass reads:

Welcome to America!
