Now momma always had a different guy over it was rarely ever the same one. That year after Christmas, the Christmas we never had, momma got all dressed up and went on a date for New Years. I don't recall guys' name however when he knocked on our door and I answered it he was holding a heavenly box of pizza. Yes Heavenly cause I ain't had a real pizza in like forever.
Oh man, the aroma of that pizza entered our house, my mouth started to water like a dog in the middle of a hot summer day.
"Who likes pizza?" He held up with a cheerful smile.
"We do, we do," the three of us yelled jumping up and down like we won something.
He sat the pizza down on the coffee table and when he went to open it we were all staring at it like it wasn't from this world. It was an extra super cheese, pepperoni pizza."
We just stared at it, I guess we just could believe that it was actually there and it was real. "Well dig in," he said.
The hot cheese burnt the roof of my mouth but I didn't care I savored every little bite of that pizza. It was like the cheese melted right in your mouth. The pepperoni, so unbelievable crunchy and spicy. The crust was so thick and soft unlike the cardboard pizza they served at school. And at that very moment, I looked up at the guy and thought who cares that momma is going out with this guy, he brought us pizza no other guy ever did that.
When they left, we stayed up to watch a movie on the DVD, cause we didn't have regular TV like the other kids did. I guess we must have fallen asleep because I woke up to yelling and then heard someone screaming to get out.
"I come home and...." Something hard hit the wall. "Who in the hell is this dude in my bed."
Momma lashed out, "He was no one really, just someone keeping me company. It's not like you are ever here anyway. Dammit I have needs just like you, you know."
"Well I don't bring strange people in my home where my damn kids are in the next room now do I." Something else hit the wall and shattered all over the floor.
"What home, you haven't been here in months and now you coming here telling what can and can't be done. You act like you been all perfect, get out of my face, get out of my house."
There was silence for a few minutes, then I heard his voice again, "I'm busting my ass off out there trying to support this family and you, you treat me like this."
"I...I..."
"Yeah..." he said, almost in a whisper.
I knew the voice, before he even opened the door. The voice that I have been begging the stars to bring home, with ever wish that I had made. And I knew then, right at that moment by the look in his eyes, I knew that would be the last time that I would ever see or hear from him.
"Dad!" Storm yelled, bracing his arms around his waist.
"Hey kido." I watched as he rubbed the top of his head. Then he reached over and grabbed my hand and pulled me up so close to him. He took our hands and walked us outside.
"Where have you been? You said it was only gonna be a couple of day." I stood beside him, looking up into his eyes. I remember trying to fight back the tears.
"I know, guess I got caught up in a lot of work, I tried to make it back, I really tried."
River stared up at him then and asked, "Are you gonna stay home dad, we miss you?"
He kneeled down beside us and just looked out into space for a few moments, trying to think of something to say. Then in a very sad voice with tears on the rise in his eyes he said, "No. I still got a lot of work to do and besides I'm pretty sure your momma doesn't want me here."
"But dad, we need you!" Storm spat back at him.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have come home." He stood up and went into the house. We followed after him; we walked to the bedroom for him to grab a bag and back out the front door. We walked all the way to the car. He gave me a kiss on the forehead and then Storm. "I'll see ya around, Ya be good for your momma and help take care of River and Dawn." Then he got in the car and started it up.
He didn't stop when we were banging on the door; he didn't stop as we ran after him all the way down the driveway and into the road. He didn't stop. And just like that he was gone and I never forgave momma for making him go. After all this was all her fault.
