Chapter 4: Mystery Solved
Matthew woke up the next morning, he got out of bed with determination to figure out this mystery writer's identity.
He went through other notes he had picked up off the floor from meetings to see if he could match the handwriting. He went through several pieces of paper. Some were notes others had taken and left at the meetings, and others were personal letters for someone else that had fallen on the floor. Picking up other countries' papers seemed like an odd thing to do, but Matthew found the forgotten writings useful for international affairs.
He looked for any handwriting that looked even remotely similar to the writing on the note. He found nothing. Absolutely nothing.
'Okay so they don't drop their papers very often..' Matthew thought to himself.
He wondered if there was anyone who could help him figure this out. He ran through all the countries that could help him in his mind. The only one who would be any help to him was Ukraine. She was smart right? Maybe she could help him.
He decided he would try and call to have a meeting with her as soon as possible.
He picked up the phone and dialed the number in his phone book.
"Привіт?" Ukraine's voice sounded at the other end.
"Um hi.. This is Canada, America's little brother. I was wondering if you could help-"
"Ah yes, Canada! Hello!"
"Oui. I was wondering if you could help me. I recently received an anonymous note and I'm trying to figure out who wrote it. I was curious as to if you could help me figure it out.." Matthew waited anxiously for a reply.
"Так, звісно! Of course, I can help you."
Matthew sighed in relief, "When and where would you like to meet up?"
"I'm still in D.C. so perhaps tomorrow we can meet up at a local café and try to figure out the puzzle. I can start driving up tonight and be there by the morning."
"Sounds great. There's a Tim Hortons right in town where we can meet up, I'll give you the address." Matthew hoped he wasn't too quiet, but Katyusha didn't seem to have trouble hearing him.
"Perfect, see you then!" Then she hung up.
Matthew looked back over at the note, reading it again. "Who could this be?" He asked no one.
"Who?" Kuma butted in.
"I'm Canada.."~~~~~~~~~~~~
Canada waited at a table close to the window, sipping on his fresh coffee. He saw Katyusha, he smiled and waved. She walked over and shook his hand, "hey!"
She sat down across from him, "so you said you have an anonymous letter?" She asked.
"Oui, I've been trying to figure out who wrote it since I got it a couple days ago," Matthew replied.
She nodded, "let me see."
Matthew handed her the folded piece of paper. Ukraine unfolded it and glanced at the writing. She looked at it with an almost shocked expression.
"This is..my brother's handwriting..."
Matthew's heart sank, "huh?"
"My younger brother wrote this I'm sure of it. I can tell by just looking at it, this is his handwriting."
Matthew nodded, trying to understand. "That was a lot quicker than I expected, thank you so much. Here take this, get something to eat while you're here." He handed her a C$20 note.
She took it happily, "thanks so much, I've heard good things about your food."
"Of course." Matthew nodded.
Matthew stayed and chatted with Katyusha until she was done eating, then headed home.
He walked inside, closing the door behind him. He walked to the couch, falling onto it face down.
"Who?" Kuma asked.
"I'm Canada. Your owner."
