Chapter 6: "You won't, just trust me"
Matthew soon woke up. He'd been asleep surprisingly long, for almost 12 hours in fact. He knew that he only had a short time left on the plane. He decided to freshen up on some of his Russian. He didn't know much, but just enough to communicate that he didn't know his way around and tell a Taxi where to go.
The plane started to descend about an hour or two later. He started to collect himself, preparing to get off the plane. He took out his phone and double checked the address that he'd gotten from a paper Latvia left behind at a meeting a couple months prior. He didn't know what he was getting himself into. He didn't have a clue what he was doing or supposed to be doing. He simply was following what something deep inside him was screaming at him. Something was telling him to visit this country. Nothing about this seemed logical to him, but he didn't care. He was going to let fate guide him as of this point, what did he have to lose anyhow?
The plane suddenly landed, bringing Matthew out of his thoughts. Once the plane stopped, Toby let him know it was okay to get off. Matthew thanked him, holding a very sleepy Kuma. He walked off the plane and into the jetway. After he reached the waiting area, he wanted to get out of the airport as soon as possible, to avoid as much interaction with others as he could. He didn't want to stand out too much as a foreigner.
Matthew and Kuma made their way out of the airport. Matthew could hear conversations all around him, none of which he could understand. He was very nervous now. He was now in another very foreign country all by himself. What was he doing?
He somehow managed to hail a taxi.
"Uhh...Такси!"
The taxi stopped, he climbed inside.
"Нужно идти сюда.." He said, showing the driver the address. He hoped they could understand.
The driver nodded and without saying a word, started driving. He stared out the window. It was about 5 PM in the evening, the sun wasn't quite going down yet. The weather here was the same as back home. It was a bit chilly as the winter season was just passing into spring. Nothing Matthew couldn't handle.
The taxi reached the long driveway another 35 minutes later,
"Спасибо," Matthew said as he paid the driver with rubles he had from his last visit; he prayed it was enough. The driver didn't say anything as he collected his things and got out of the taxi.
The car sped off as he looked up the long driveway. He set Kuma down. He started walking and the tired bear followed behind. Soon the house was in sight. It was very large. A mansion even. As he got closer he could see there was only one room on the second floor with lights on. He walked up to the walkway. Before Matthews brain could process anything he was at the front door.
This is where he started to rethink about all of this.
'What if he's weirded out?'
'What if he mistakes me for Alfred?'
'What if he doesn't want me here?'
'What if the note really is a trap?'
He pulled the note out on last time, reading it over.
He sighed, putting it away and knocking on the door.
He waited. He heard noises on the other side.
His anxiety heightened, he didn't know what was going to happen.
He was terrified, he wondered if this truly was the right thing to do. Everything was happening so fast. So very, very fast. It was hard for the young nation to process it all. It felt like just a couple minutes ago he read the note for the first time, now he was at Russia's doorstep. And for what? What was he going to do? What could he do? He couldn't just force a friendship on Russia, so why was he here?
Before his thoughts could race anymore, the door opened slightly.
"Какого черта ты хочешь?!" Russia growled, looking to see who it was.
He paused seeing Matthew.
"C-Canada?" He questioned, opening the door more.
"What are you doing at my house?" Russia asked. He tried to register the sudden language transition in his mind.
"I-I got y-your letter..." Matthew stuttered.
"Hm?" The larger nation seemed confused.
"The letter... you left it on my doorstep...the day after the meeting in D.C."
Russia's eyes widened, "you knew it was me?"
Matthew nodded, "I thought I would..maybe come to talk with you. I thought...you wanted my friendship..." He tried to sound somewhat confident, he didn't want Russia to think he was scared of him. Matthew wasn't afraid of him. Not even intimidated. He simply got anxious talking to others, he wasn't used to any attention at all, let alone a personal one on one conversation.
"You want to be my friend? Why?" Russia asked.
"Because the things you said in the note...I understand being alone..you deserve to not feel alone."
"What have I done to deserve this? I am simply a monster. You should stay away, I do not want to hurt you."
"You won't, just trust me. I know what you're going through. You just want someone to be there for you right?"
"..Дa.."
"Me too.." Matthew looked up at him. He hadn't pushed him away like he thought he would.
"I know we don't know each other well, but perhaps we could try to get acquainted better." Russia smiled slightly. Not a scary smile like the ones he wore any other time, but a somewhat genuine one. He opened the door gesturing Matthew inside.
Did he just get Russia to somehow trust him enough to invite him INSIDE his HOME?
Matthew nodded, walking inside, Kuma in tail.
Russia looked down at the bear, "What is this one's name?"
"Kumajiro," The bear answered for himself.
"Oui. I've had him my whole life. He's kinda been my companion all these years." Matthew added.
Russia nodded slightly, closing the door behind Kuma.
