She groaned inwardly. The bus was packed and already the smell of unwashed bodies, cheap perfume and the smell of stale tobacco assaulted her nose. With a deep breath, she paid her fare and found an empty seat, all the while hoping that just once she would be able to ride in peace.
Unfortunately, she never was that lucky. Every time she travelled by bus, another passenger would sit beside her, and before you know it she would know everything about that person’s life. She was not looking to swap life stories and she never invited them to discuss their personal life with her. For whatever reason she just seemed to attract those who wanted to talk.
Which was funny considering she wasn’t much of a people person. Yes, she had a few close friends but that was it. She would shun group activities; instead, she liked nothing better than enjoying her self-imposed solitude.
Smiling to herself, Elise didn’t notice the passengers that alighted the bus until one sat beside her. Feeling as if her personal space was being invaded she shuffled closer to the window, hoping that he would stay on his side of the seat.
He didn’t and leaned closer. Irritated Elise turned to him a forced smile on her face. The young man appeared to be in his mid-twenties was dressed in a slightly rumpled navy blue suit. Seeing her smile, he smiled back. Before she could ask him to give her a little space, he blurted, “I’m off for a job interview.” He ran his hands along his thighs, “God, I’m so nervous. But I can’t wait.”
“Oh good luck.” Elise didn’t want to join in a conversation, but felt she had to be polite. He took her answer as a reason to strike up a conversation. She sighed and knew that she would have to at least pretend to be interested in what he had to say.
As she nodded, in what she hoped was in all the right places. She felt the hairs on her neck stand on end. It was a strange sensation, and made her feel uncomfortable. As she looked around the bus, she felt a pair of eyes on her. She turned towards the back of the bus and her gaze fell upon an elderly woman.
She had a halo of hair that was grey; she was unremarkable in many ways. However, her eyes were striking. They were blue and were staring back at her. Smiling she turned her gaze away and tried to keep up with the young man’s conversation. As it turned out her bus buddy was named Carl and he was a writer hoping to land a job with the local newspaper. But the sensation of those eyes boring into the back of her head stayed with her.
It was days like these that she mentally cursed herself for not learning to drive. It was with a slight relief when Carl said goodbye and she wished him good luck, which earned her a grin from him before he disappeared into the crowd of people milling about. His smile had taken her aback slightly, he wasn’t handsome in the conventional sense, but when he grinned like that, it lit up his face.
She sighed as she realised it might have been much better if she would have paid more attention to him; it had been awhile since she’d been on a date. Mentally shrugging she chalked it up to a missed opportunity but soon her thoughts turned to work. She had a busy day ahead and the sooner she got there, the better.
Elise saw it was her turn to get off the bus. As she pressed the bell, to alert the driver she wanted to get off the next stop. A cold hand grabbed hers. She squeaked, not used to being accosted by people. She turned and saw it was the old woman who had been sitting at the back.
"Run", was all she said. The hair on Elise’s arms stood up.
"Sorry, what did you say?" she asked, trying to slide her hand away.
"Run!" she said a little more loudly...
The woman’s blue eyes held Elise in her stare. The pupils of her eyes had gotten larger, so that only a small sliver of blue could be seen. Elise turned her gaze onto the rest of the passengers hoping that someone would intervene. But not a single person acknowledged their conversation.
