Even when the world had gone crazy, I have to give Collins his due, he certainly made us feel comfortable. He pandered to me and Carl. He showed us our rooms, or room, - two single beds. And he cooked up a feast. Well, it was to me and Carl. We ate until, our stomachs would burst. For all we knew, this could be our last meal. Or Maybe there's something about fighting Aliens, that makes you eat as if your life depended on it? But we were both grateful. Collins had invited his two other 'friends' and we were all settled around his dining room table.
His two friends appeared to be two soldiers, who'd also had a glimpse of the true horror that was unfolding. They didn't give their names, and neither did we. Just knowing there were others willing to fight was enough to unite us.
"Look, we know they're sending people to Eastbourne. But unless we have evidence. No one is going to believe us. Now what better way to infiltrate the world, than going through the countries that are least resistant to a hostile takeover?" Collins said "America is already awash with UFOS's and conspiracy theories. As soon as something was amiss, they'd know. But England, well..... things like that are generally scoffed at by us." I agreed. The English were not known for flights of fancy. It was all stiff upper lip, no nonsense facts. Maybe if we had been more open minded, we'd have seen this coming, I mused.
"Well then, let's give them something that they can't scoff at." Carl looked at Collins, "Well Mr G.I Joe, what have you got planned?"
Collins pulled out what looked like a map, or more accurately a floor plan of some sort of building. "Actually, a lot. I can get you into the main compound, these two guys here" He nodded to the two silent men, "Are your key to being able to go through the two main entrances. I have a camera, that you can record with, and Jim here", He motioned to the guy with the dark hair. "Has a terminal link that will instantly upload.".... Oh my god, Oh my god....we were really doing this. I suddenly felt a little sick.
"So we're just going to record what's going on? Can we not get people out?" Asked Carl
"No, it's not that simple. I wish to god it was". He ran his hands through his hair "Look, I'm sorry, especially as I know you think Sophie and David might be in there. But we wont do much good if we get caught. People need to know about this, we need to let the world know. That will give us a fighting chance, instead of being blindly led, like lambs to the slaughter." I hated it, but I knew Collins was right. I just hoped I'd remember his advice when the time came. I'm not sure if I could leave behind people I could help. I was still having nightmares about the those people we'd left caged.
"Right. We'll leave in an hour. It shouldn't take too long for us to get to Eastbourne. I've got a jeep, we'll pack the things we need and set off.
We soon arrived at Southbourne Lake. The army base, was well hidden, and not on any of the maps. It made sense then, that this would be the headquarters. If no one knew it wasn't there, they couldn't find it. Collins and his two friends had given me and Carl, ID Badges. Collins explained that it would help us to get past the security and into level one of the facility. We approached the gates, and once we showed our IDs and had them confirmed, we were waved through. But the sight of those soldiers with those huge guns, made me pale. I'd never seen a real gun up close, and I hope to god I'd never have to use a weapon like that. Just call me a pacifist.
We got out of the Jeep, and headed through the reception area. Where we were searched thoroughly. After finding nothing, they buzzed us through two metal double doors. So this was level 1. It just looked like an office, a series of smaller offices were off to the left hand side, whist the open floor had mini cubicles, each with a terminal and a body busily typing away. Collins, handed me a peice of paper and a small holdall, nodded to me and Carl and disappeared into one of the side offices. I looked at Carl, well it was now or never.
