The Beginning (See What I Did There)

I walk down the street, peppy music playing in the background and my backpack swinging from one shoulder.

I'm on my way to school and the sun is shining like it does every day.

Everything is the same day by day here. Nothing changes.

We literally learn the same thing every day in school. We have been for years. I can quote all of my classes by heart.

Finally, I reach the high school building. I look at my watch. 7:57. Same as usual.

I push open the doors and lumber down the hallway to first period.

When I walk into class, it hits me.

Remember how I said the same things happen every day? Well something's different today.

Is the giant poster of a rat gone? (Biology class)

Nope. Still there.

Did David, the jock, stop bringing his football to class? Dream on.

Then I realize, nothing was taken away or changed, someone was added.

A new girl sits at the back of the classroom, her feet propped up on her desk.

Part of her strikingly, electric blue hair is hidden under a black beanie. She wears a black tank top, black leather jacket, mini skirt, tights, and boots.

She has a choker necklace with a skull as a small silver charm perched exactly in the middle of her neck.

Her appearance screams rebel hacker.

She blows a bubble with her gum and pops it in my direction.

She has to be breaking about three rules that make up the dress code right now, including the no chewing gum during class rule.

She seems to eye me warily, still blowing bubbles.

Creepy.

I quickly turn around and sit in my chair, but I can still feel her gaze burning into the back of my head.

That's when my teacher comes in, same time every day.

It seems he doesn't even notice the new girl as he tells us to get our textbooks out.

And the girl doesn't say a word for the whole class.
