The New Girl

I decide to shrug off the new girl. I mean, she can't change my life can she?

My first period finally ends and I dash out of class, leaving the new girl to clean up her books.

She isn't in any of my other classes.

At the end of the day, I leave the building and breathe in the fresh spring air.

Then I see her, the new girl.

She keeps glancing behind her as if making sure no one is following her.

I stand there for a few seconds trying to decide whether or not to trail behind.

On the upside, she could be up to something and I could turn her in.

On the downside, she could be paranoid, catch me following her, and turn me in for being a stalker.

I decide to take my chances.

She makes her way down an alleyway, turning to look behind her every few minutes.

She almost saw me one time but I managed to duck behind a trash can.

Finally, she turns onto a quiet street and stops, glancing at her watch.

Almost like she's waiting for someone.

I crouch behind a bush and watch.

We wait a few minutes and she keeps looking at her watch, her face scrunched up in annoyance.

"Just like him to be late," she sighs.

A while later, a boy walks up from the opposite direction.

"Hey," he says, with a smile plastered on his face.

He wears a red shirt and tan khakis, his feet in white sneakers. He has short, light brown hair tucked under a baseball hat that has been thrown on backwards.

"You're late Dylan," the girl states, her annoyance coming through in her voice.

"Sorry, had a hard time finding this place," the boy, Dylan, says sheepishly, putting his hand behind his head but a smile still evident on his face.

The girl rolls her eyes but she's smiling now.

"Well," she says, "at least you're here. Did you find anything about the boss?"

The boss?

"No such luck," the boy says, the smile melting off of his face.

The girl is frowning again. "Then I guess we'll have to keep looking."

"Yeah."

She notices the frown on Dylan's face and steps forward, putting her arms around him. "Don't worry, we'll get out of here, I promise."

He smiles. "I know."

That's when I lose my balance and fall over, making the leaves of the bush rustle like crazy. They both turn and look at the place where I'm hiding.
