The next day, I make my way to school.
I check my watch. 7:57. Like usual.
I bounce up the stairs and heave open the doors.
For once, I'm excited for Biology. It means I get to see Adanya.
I wave and smile at people as I walk through the hallways. No one even smiles back.
That's just sad if you ask me.
I make it to my class and see Adanya sitting in the back.
David twirls his football in the desk next to me.
The bell rings. My teacher, Mr Martin, should be here in exactly one minute.
But one minute passes and he's still not here.
Four more minutes pass before he comes running into the classroom, his hair disheveled and his clothes horribly wrinkled. His tie isn't even tucked into his jacket.
"Sorry I'm late,' he huffs, "I was late and didn't beat the morning traffic."
He plops his briefcase on his desk and opens it. He's never done that before.
Something is definitely up.
"Please open your books to chapter ten," he states in a monotone voice.
We were on chapter nine yesterday.
Some girls giggle in the back of the room and a boy throws a paper crumpled up into a ball at them so they shut up.
That's new too.
I turn to Adanya, a confused look on my face.
She also looks troubled.
She sees me looking at her and mouths one sentence across the room.
We need to talk.
