"Baby, won't you change your mind?"

My wrist was stained with a purple bruise under the bathroom lights. Tyler really did do a number on me. I pulled down my sleeve. Why was I such an easy target? Did they see my plump flesh and just decide I the one who was sweet enough for them to sink their teeth into? I was a cub who needed its mother to protect her from these lurking perils. But instead, she just invited the danger to come right into our cave.

I put my hair into a bun and splashed my face with cold water. I was supposed to meet Jade for lunch and I thought I'd try to cleanse my skin from his touch, from the tears. I could have scrubbed until I bled, but nothing was going to erase that film of shame.

"Violet, you're unusually quiet." Jade peered at me.

"Aren't I always?" I shrugged.

Jade squinted her eyes. "Hmmm, I guess."

She shook it off, taking a slurp from her iced tea.

"Oh shit." She placed her hand to mine. "How have these last few days with Tyler been?"

"Fine."

"Oh honey, that's not enough. Spill the deets." She tapped my hand.

I swallowed, pulling my arm away. "I'd rather not."

"Don't be a bitch, Violet." Jade rolled her eyes. "Tell me."

My hands shot up. "I just don't want to. Okay?"

"God, why are you being so secretive? First, you desert me at the party the other night and now this." She scoffed, "What the fuck?"

I started tearing up. Light sobs escaped from my lips.

Jade's eyes widen. "Um...I'm sorry."

Silence ate at the air.

"Are you alright?"

I shook my head, wiping away a few tears.

"Is it..." she paused, "about Tyler?"

"I don't want to talk about this here."

"Yeah, of course." Jade stood from her chair. "Let's go to my car."

Jade threw a fifty down. I followed her towards the exit, cowering my eyes away from the other tables.

We strolled through the parking lot and hopped in her Range Rover. I sank down into the plush leather.

She closed the driver door and turned to face me, crossing her legs.

"What happened?"

I gritted my teeth, not wanting to say it. Like somehow, I was a dirty little slut for letting it happen.

"Tyler..." I couldn't face her. "he forced himself on me."

Jade didn't say anything, which only elevated my nerves.

I looked to her eyes. Please say something.

"I'm stupid, I'm so stupid." I shook my head.

She reached her hand out. "Hey, hey," she spoke quietly, "you're not stupid, Violet."

She laid a hand to her chest. "If anything, it's my fault. I'm sorry."

"It's not anyones fault, Jade."

"No, it really is. I didn't get that impression from him at all."

I sighed. "Yeah, me neither. But, I guess we never know what's truly on someone's mind." I turned to look out the window.
