-Your POV-

You sat on the table across from Margaret, and then she smiled at you. The two of you take the time to glance out the window, and see the parking lot of a crowded Starbucks. A barista comes over with your orders, and then sets them down in front of you. The two of you thank her and give her tips, and then the two of you fall back into the awkward silence, and then both of you try to find a subject the two of you can talk about. Eventually, she sighs and then sits back in the chair. " Where are we," she asks, and then she hesitates for a few moments. " And don't say Starbucks. I mean, where are me and you?"

" I don't know Margaret, and I'm sorry for saying that. This is great. You're this lovely, smart and attractive girl. If I were younger, or in a different part of my life, then I would be all for this. But right now, I'm just not sure and I know that isn't fair to you. I just don't know." Margaret nods when you say this, and then the two of you fall back into the silence from earlier.

" Barbara? Is she why you're unsure about this?" You nod, and then Margaret sits up and reaches over to place her hands over yours. " I asked you once, and you dodged the question. What exactly is Barbara to you? I deserve to know if she's the reason you aren't sure about you and me." You nod when she says this, and then you hesitate for a few moments and then sigh, because you know she's right about everything she just said. And so, you take a few moments to ready yourself to tell the story about Barbara.

" She and I grew up across the street from each other, and I've had a crush on her pretty much forever. I actually think somewhere down the line, I fell in love with her. But, she introduced me to her boyfriend and then I went to the bar where we met. Margaret, I'm sure you're great but I'm just not in a space where I can date right now." She nods at this, and then looks into the distance like she's thinking about something.

" Is this what Barbara would want for you? If she's really your friend, wouldn't she want you to date someone," she asks, and then you look at her in confusion. " I don't get your hesitation. The two of you never dated to begin with, so I don't see what's the problem here. Nothing ever happened between the two of you."

"You're right, nothing ever has. But, I don't wanna know that nothing ever could happen. I'm willing to wait for Barbara okay?" You stand and then turn to leave and then Margaret cuts in front and stops you. Before you can try to leave again she places a hand on your chest, and looks into your eyes.

" If the roles were reversed, wouldn't you want Barbara to move on and find someone new? Isn't that what you would want? And don't you think she wants you to move on and find someone new?" You look at Margaret confused when she says this, and then she begins to pace around the room.

" I know you'll wait for her, but would she want you to? I mean, do you really think Barbara would be okay with you putting your life on hold to be with her? She may be an amazing girl worth the wait,  if it's easier to wait for the bus if you knows it's coming. Do you really want to put your entire life on hold for a hypothetical someday?"

When she says this, you begin to pace the room, your thoughts tossed into confusion as you realize she may have a point. " And, is that really fair to Barbara for you to wait for her forever? I mean, that might be a lot of pressure to put on her, even if you don't mean to. It isn't fair if she always thinks she has to be careful to avoid hurting you, and it's not fair to you to wait for something which may never happen."

" Margaret, I need time to think," you tell her, and then you sit back down and she puts her hands on the table and looks down at you.

" You've has a lifetime of knowing Barbara to think. You've thought about it long enough (y/n). I need to know right now what you want to do. I need to know if I'm going to be wasting my time here. Barbara isn't the only pretty girl in the world. You and I can clearly have something which you might come to realize is exactly what you want. Are you willing to let that pass by you on the chance Barbara and you end up together?"

You took the time to close your eyes, and really begin to think about it. Some of what Margaret was saying was true, and it was really making you think. Maybe if things were going to happen between you and Barbara, then they would have by this point. She had known you her whole life, and decided the two of you were going to be platonic. Trevor hadn't been her first boyfriend, and you doubted he was gonna be the last. Some part of you had always thought it was noble to wait for Barbara, but maybe it was foolish and selfish like Margaret was saying. Still, it wouldn't be fair to Margaret to date her if your heart belonged to someone else.

She looks at you expectantly, and then your mind goes into overdrive. Every doubt you ever had about Barbara flooded to you, but so did every hope you ever had. Above all, you pictured once again having a long day at work, and coming home to Barbara and your children. But looking up, you realizes it wasn't Barbara there. It was Margaret. And so, you kissed her and she returned it.

( started this on the plane and finished on a bus. Let me know what you thought)
