The sound of a door slamming woke Dani up the next morning. Her eyes fluttered open. She lied there for a minute, taking in where she was and what had happened in the last few hours. Her heart dropped to her stomach once she realized she and Austin talked for the first time in months last night.

Rolling over and letting out a long tired moan, she reached for her phone and scrolled down her lock screen. And of course, the tweeters had already started several hours ago.

Daustin is baaaaack!

The girl's friend that asked about her and Austin last night had posted the picture of Austin kissing her on the cheek with amazing filter and editing skills. She stared at the picture. The smile on her face looked so completely real. Even Austin looked like he was smiling behind that kiss.

So why did he completely brush her off afterward?

Favoriting the tweet and trying to erase her paranoia from her mind, she scrolled down to read more tweets.

Most of them made her smile. Not many people were actually being mean, which surprised her. Finally deciding she would get up to see why her band mates and crew were so quiet after slamming the bus door, she hopped off her bunk to find that none of them were in their beds. She opened the door to the front lounge and there at their table sat Jeff, Erick, and Andrew. Across from them at the couch was Vic, bundled up in a large sweatshirt with his hood over one of his usual snapbacks.

“Where's Eddie and Nick?” She asked hoarsely. Jeff looked at Vic, shaking and hanging his head. “What?” She asked, her eyes wide.

“What the hell happened last night?” Erick asked. “You told all of us that you broke up with Austin. Then, last night you told a fan that you would never think twice about breaking up with him.”

Dani looked each of her band mates in the eye. She nervously chewed her bottom lip and looked over at Vic, who looked confused and hurt most of all. “Austin and I may or may not be pretending we're in a relationship so people stop asking about us.”

All but Vic groaned. “Dani, are you fucking stupid?” Andrew suddenly snapped. Vic glared at him, making his expression soften. “You can't do that. You're only going to get hurt. He's using you for his own publicity because he doesn't want to look bad.”

“You don't know why we broke up, so don't give me that speech.” Dani sneered.

“Well, maybe it'd help if you did tell us. You were torn apart for weeks, Dani. If he hurt you, tell us. I know you don't want me to rip him a new one, but I will.”

“He didn't hurt me!” Dani shouted, shutting him up. They all looked away from her awkwardly. “I'm not actually the victim, he is. I'm not ready to come clean about what happened. I know you guys think you can protect me from everything but you can't. You couldn't protect me from this.”
