“Do you have your potions book with you?” Reyna asked and inspected him further. That was basically how they walked to class together for the most part.
“Yes, for the tenth time, I have it,” Nico said grumpily but he was glad to know Reyna cared about him. Or at least his grade in potions.
“Your hair is getting pretty long, Nico,” she said while tugging at a dark strand that he couldn’t get to stay put that morning.
Nico walked past her and entered the classroom before she could make any more unsubtle comments about him cutting his hair.
Professor D (or Dionysus but no one really cared enough to call him that) wasn’t there yet so the Gryffindor and Ravenclaw students milled around the work tables.
Jason spotted him and came over to say hi or something Jason-like to him.
“Hey Nico-“
“Mr. Gale, I hope you know your mindless chatting is cutting in to our lesson time,” A familiar voice called out to the young man. Jason turned around to see Professor D looking unamused at him. He murmured a quick ‘no sir’ and stood next to Nico.
“Now, class, if there aren’t any more interruptions, today I will be teaching you the art of potion making. There will be no levitating feathers and muttering ridiculous spells in this room. Based on my past experiences, unfortunately, I expect that some of you will not appreciate this practice, however for those that do I will show you how to concoct potions that any basic wizard should know . “
This wasn’t the first time Nico had heard Professor’s D short speech about the wonders of potions so he could probably recite it on his own if he had too since it was always the same.
“I will be paring you up into groups. Sit with said person at a worktable and try not to complain. I have the seating on a paper so do not think I won’t notice if you switch seats. “
He turned from the group of students and to his desk and started to call out names.
“Annie Bell and Pepper.”
“One of the Stoll brothers and Renee.”
“Um sir, which one of us?”
“Does it look like I really care?”
“Jackson and Nick.”
After getting all the names of the class wrong, which isn’t surprising because it was sixth year and everyone was pretty much used to it, he told them to turn to page one hundred sixty and begin to make the Wit-Sharpening potion.
It was a potion they had already covered in forth year, but he didn’t trust them enough to start on something to difficult. Though the potion wasn’t even that hard, Nico still struggled with it. Jason, however, was already getting to work on it, grabbing ginger roots and mixing it into the cauldron. His movements weren’t calculated as if he already knew what to do. Jason was best at potions out of the eight of them much to everyone’s surprise.
He put in two more things until the potion turned a nice purple color.
“Now we just have to wait ten minutes for the liquid to simmer and we’ll be almost done,” Jason stated and he looked almost proud of himself.
“I will never understand how you’re so good at this,” Nico said mostly to himself, but loud enough so Jason could hear.
“I can help you after class with potions if you'd like,” Jason offered with a very Jason-like grin. He didn’t know when he started using Jason-like as an adjective but it suited the boy just fine.
