Chapter 3: A Couple Games of Mythomagic

The rest of the week was fairly uneventful. Ethan was still in the Hospital Wing unconscious, and the cause of his freak accident was still a mystery. The only thing they knew was that he had been cursed.The work of a skilled wizard. 

Nico was walking back to his dorms. Classes had ended and Nico was looking forward for a day without them. Enter in Saturday. 

“Hey, Nico!” a voice shouted at him, and he heard running footsteps through the crowded halls and annoyed students yelling at said person. 

Stopping, Nico turned slightly to get a view of the maniac dashing to catch up with him. Over his shoulder he could make out a head of dark curls. 

“Leo.” Nico groaned under his breath. 

“Hey Nico-,” Leo stopped mid-sentence when he realized who he was talking to. It was safe to say the Nico intimated him slightly. (Okay, probably more than slightly in his case) The look he was giving Leo wasn’t really helping either. 

Leo coughed awkwardly. “Um, I was talking to Hazel and she told me to ask you about the Hogsmeade trip. You know, if you’re going or not..?” He asked unsure with his hand grasping the back of his neck. 

“You can tell her I’m going, just not sure with who yet,” Nico answered unfazed by Leo’s behavior. The two were starting to become friends last school year, but they had a weird friendship, Leo not wanting to cross any imaginary lines Nico drew. Seeing as the conversation was over Nico turned and continued his way to the Ravenclaw dorms.

“Oh, and Leo?”  Nico said, turning around as if remembering something.

“Yeah?” Leo asked with his trademark grin.

“Don’t talk to my sister.”

At about an hour before curfew Nico was sprawled out on the Ravenclaw common room couch shuffling a deck of Mythomagic cards. Heck, he didn’t even mean to have them out.

 After rummaging through his trunk he found them tucked neatly against some books and decided to take them out. It had been sometime since he played with them. (The beginning of summer when Hazel had invited Frank to stay at the manor for a week to be exact. He had actually proved to be a pretty good player much to Nico’s surprise.) 

“Hello, Nico” Reyna greeted while taking the seat next to him. Without looking he murmured a ‘hi’. 

Seeing his lack of response she looked at him with her penetrating stare, almost willing him to get up from his uncomfortable looking position. Thus leading to Reyna getting up and yanking the boy up into a sitting position. 

“Are you okay?” Reyna asked with her usual reserved expression, but the concern in her voice gave it away. 

Nico glanced at her and shook his head. “I’m fine, just thinking.” Thinking was a slight understatement. He kept replaying the Ethan incident. The way he just fell to the ground, the bruises covering him like tattoos, the anguished screams that tried to come out of his mouth. Okay, so maybe Nico was taking this a bit too far, but he wasn’t over-exaggerating, right? He willed the thoughts to go away. 

Reyna looked at him, analyzing his face for anything she could find. Or at least that’s how Nico saw it, because he felt like he was being studied underneath her gaze. 

After looking satisfied, she grabbed a deck that Nico left on the table. 

“Now that that’s settled, would you like to play a couple of rounds?”

Five rounds later, they sat on the couch, exhausted. Nico had won three of the rounds, but was still impressed that Reyna could beat him, being a new comer to the game. Another thing Reyna could easily become good at. 

“The teachers think that someone with dark forces is on the school grounds. More or so because of what happened with Ethan.” Reyna stated breaking his thoughts. 

“Where’d you hear that?” Nico said, biting his lip. 

“I was in the Infirmary the other day. Some of the professors were trying to find a cause and it came up. And it’s likely because of all the dark wizards rising into power. Especially that one wizard- Kronos I think it is?” 

Nico was about to reply when Annabeth came through the portrait door. She looked drained and hadn’t even acknowledged them as she quickly walked to the girls’ dorms. Nico would ask about it in the morning. 

“It’s uh getting late. Think we should head up to our dorms.” Nico offered looking at the grandfather clock that sat against the wall.

Reyna nodded and called out a ‘good night’ before heading up. Nico gathered up all his cards and gave one last look of the common room. The ticks of the clock and roar of the fireplace made it seem so…safe. He wondered if there actually could be a potentially dangerous threat lurking through the school. 

He shook his head and used both of his hands to wipe his face, even if there was nothing to wipe off. 

“Good night.” he said to no one in particular and made his way to the boys’ dormitories. 

A/N: So how have you guys been liking the story so far? I’ve been trying to write and I guess it happened. If you read the story on my joint account MoonandWisdom, I can say that I am trying to update that as well. In addition I'm thinking about writing in other third person PoV's of different characters, so comment if you have any suggestions/requests. :D

 Another thing, ten votes and over a hundred reads (?) I know that’s not a lot by any means but it’s a sort of milestone for me as the author I guess :), so keep on doing what you’re doing.
