Mr. Vernon strutted like he owned the damn school and stared us down.
"Well well, here we are. I want to congratulate you for being on time."
Claire raised her hand.
"Excuse me sir. I think there's been a mistake. I know it's detention but um, I don't think I belong in here."
I rolled my eyes.
"Reina perra," I whispered.
Translation: Queen bitch.
"It is now seven o six, you have exactly eight hours and fifty four minutes to think about why you're here. To ponder the error of your ways."
John spat in the air and caught it back in his mouth.
"You will not talk."
Vernon looked at Claire.
"You will not move from these seats."
He looked at Brian, he was about to switch seats. Vernon walked to John, grabbing the chair form under him.
"And you will not sleep!"
He started passing out paper and pencils.
"Alright people, we're gonna try something a little different today. We are going to write an essay, of no less than a thousand words."
"Is this a test?" John asked.
"When I say essay, I mean essay. I don't mean a single word repeated a thousand times. Is that clear Mr. Bender?"
"Crystal."
Vernon looked at me.
"Miss. Moreno?"
"Si senor."
"English please?"
"Yes sir."
"Good. You're in America, speak English! Where was I? My office is right across that hall. Any monkey business is ill advised. Any questions?"
Andrew and Claire shook their heads.
"Yeah, I got a question," John said.
We all turned to him.
"Does Barry Manilow know that you raid his wardrobe?"
We giggled silently but Vernon.
"I'll give you the answer that question Mr. Bender next Saturday."
I gave him a mean look.
"Ellos no te llaman Dick por nada," I said out loud accidentally on purpose.
Translation: They don't call you Dick for nothing.
"What was that!?" Vernon asked.
"Nothing Mr. Vernon."
"That's right! Don't mess with the bull young lady you'll get the horns."
He walked out.
"That man is a brownie hound," John said.
"Orale!" I nodded.
John smiled in agreement.
