Me, John, Claire, and Brian were sitting on the couch in the back of the library. John rolled a joint for Brian. John was doing it for everybody else, Brian started playing around with the smoke and made me giggle. Claire took a puff of her joint, she coughed, making John laugh silently.
"Chicks cannot hold their smoke, that's what it is," Bri said in a weird voice.
We laughed some more.
"Do you know how popular I am. I'm so popular, everyone loves me so much at this school," Claire said.
"Poor baby," John replied.
John motioned Brian for a high five. Brian was about to go for it, John bopped his head making him fall back. Claire and me were laughing harder than ever.
Andrew walked out of one of the rooms upstairs, he took one last puff of his joint. He started running around the top floor of the library doing cartwheels and stuff. I looked at John, he was smiling real big. He looked adorable when he smiles! What the hell did I just think!? He's still a bad influence on his peers! But he's so cute! Stop it Maria! Stop! Andrew got back to that room and closed the door, he screamed so loud, the glass on the door shattered.
Claire was going through John's stuff while he was going through hers. I was with Andrew and Brian.
"Check this out, he's got a fake ID."
I looked at the ID Andrew showed me.
"Bri, why do you have a fake ID?"
"So I can vote."
"You know you made yourself 68?" Andrew asked.
"I over did it."
We giggled.
"Maria?" Andrew asked.
"Yeah?"
"I uh, I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"My team. You've been discriminated a lot lately especially by the wrestling team. I want to apologize also if I did anything to you."
"Andrew, don't worry about it."
I gave him a quick hug.
"Can I confess something?"
"Sure, Andrew. Can I call you Andy?"
"Yeah. Here goes. The reason why I do sports and go along with my so called friends is to please my old man. He wants me to win every wrestling meet so I can get a scholarship for college. He puts a lot of pressure on me because of my athletic abilities. If I lost that, he might not give a shit about me anymore. I've been doing all I can so he'll love me. He's racist against black people and Mexicans. I try to be like him but deep down in my heart, I'm not like that at all."
I saw tears in his eyes.
"My parents got deported because they came to this country illegally over twenty years ago. I know what it feels like to witness my parents get forcefully dragged out of the house by the cops. Aliens they called them. If my big brother wasn't over 18 at the time, I would've been dragged to foster home. Diego Moreno was another bad boy, worse than John. One of the East LA cholo gangsters before we moved here a couple years before our parents' deportation. He was the same, cholo gangsters here in Illinois too. After it happened, Diego cleaned up his act enough to get a job and take care of me the best he can. He's doing a good job."
Andy hugged me tight.
