I walked upstairs slowly. I heard John breathing heavily.
"John? Can I talk to you, por favor?"
"Leave me the fuck alone."
"John please!"
"Leave me alone!" John's voice boomed.
"Alright, fine. I was just going to say that I know what you're going through. I understand. I can relate on a personal level."
I started walking down.
"Maria, wait."
I stopped and walked back to him.
"Who's been abusing you?"
"Racist classmates and teachers. They bully me. I hear remarks like 'go back to Mexico!' and 'go to the corner and eat a taco.' A teacher once threatened to call the cops telling them I was illegal. Andrew and his friends beat the shit out of me once. Andrew and Larry Lester was only a bystander. To make myself feel better, I beat the shit out of Andrew after you came up here."
"I know, I heard you screaming."
I sat across from him.
"Hold on, you said you have a brother. He takes care of you."
"Hmm hmm. He doesn't know I get bullied. I never told him. Diego has a lot on his mind as it is. He tries to take care of me and all our bill payments at the same time with a low income. You see, our parents got deported because they came here illegally, snuck across the border all the way to East LA. My mother was pregnant with Diego at the time. She had him in America, so glad or else I'd be placed in foster care. Diego is twenty two and I'm sixteen. Before they got deported, they had such good jobs, Diego was in college studying arts and humanities, he wants to be a musician. After they got deported, he dropped out of university and get a job, just for me. He had no choice!-"
I started to cry, I choked as I said the last sentence.
"My dad beats me, my mom does only when she's fucked up on drugs. She's a nice beautiful woman but when she gets her fix, she's like this evil witch, it's like she's unrecognizable. Dad's always been a douche. Drinking only makes it worse. He believe women are sex slaves, servants for their husbands. I try to be exact opposite."
He helped me up and we hugged. John looked at Andrew and Claire.
"Gladly, they didn't look. Don't tell anybody we hugged or shared any affection. Frenemies?"
"Frenemies."
We shook hands. We walked back downstairs.
"Come on guys, we're going on a trip," John said.
"Vaminos!"
They followed us.
